The normal 60k service is about 350-400 I think. The "extra" is the Timing Belt/water pump, which is another $700 or so, which has been heavily debated on this board on whether it is necessary at 60k

The q-clubbers and those in the know say that 60k is when it should be done, cause if it breaks you're looking a valve job and another $5000. So it's cheap insurance to do it earlier.

The owners manual says to do timing belt at 90k miles for the 2.8 engine. But it doesn't say anything about the 1.8T engine.

So I really don't know what to do either. Who's going to do it, and who's going to wait? I've heard of people who had a timing belt break on a 2.8 at 50k miles too, but I have no idea on whether the car was driven hard or normal, or if it was a fluke or not.

It was a timing belt or Hawaii, so I opted for Hawaii. I have to admit, I'm a bit nervous about pushing my luck. I'm definitely planning to do it at 75K, which is only only 9K (4 months away).

I think the 2.8 12V should be good to 90K.

Bringing it to a local shop today- at 74.5k miles. Cost: just over $300- so the question is, did I get a very good deal on the timing belt job- or did you get a very good deal on a trip to Hawii.

last that long. Are you serious? For less than $300 you can save $1000's and have piece of mind. Unless you're of the "ignorance is bliss" school.

You just don't replace the belt, you need to examine the belt and replace it if it needs it, mine in my 83 UrQuattro went 360K w/o needing a new belt, head gasket went at 360K so replaced the belt at same time ...
