View Full Version : DSG and 6th Gear @ 60 km

I love my new A3 S Line. I came back to Audi as I owned an A4 in the past and I'm happy to be back.

DSG is my first departure from manual in many years. I still prefer manual but my wife's happy. The reality is that I enjoy it in every day driving - bumper to bumper traffic.

I'm annoyed, though, with the fact that 6th gear kicks in at 60 to 70 kmph. What happens is that you step on the accelerator at low speed and get nothing, step on it harder, nothing, nothing, and THEN, it kicks down two gears and kicks your head back. I could put it in sport mode which holds shifts longer, but that's too aggressive for everyday driving.

Can anyone relate to this? Has anyone heard of a software fix of some sort?

Thanks,

Marc

You're lucky. I have yet to get mine to drop just one or two gears when accelerating. It always drops from 6th to 3rd. If I know I need to accelerate, I just slap it into manual, drop down 1 or 2 gears and go. When I'm done, I switch back to automatic. I find regular automatic to be too twitchy.

No need to use the gear selector unless you're going to stay in manual mode.

I've never owned an automatic, and my first instinct is to go for the shifter.

If you have access to a VAGCOM, check to see if the kickdown block is showing ADP ERR like mine was showing for the longest time.
If it is, re-do the kickdown adaptation procedure.

This will not prevent DSG from shifting into 6th after 40MPH in D mode, but it will improve the kickdown behavior, once you need to use it.

Kickdown Adaptation Procedure

a few times and S only a couple. I always leave it in 'M' and use the paddles. I think its great that DSG can accomodate such a wide variety of driving styles and match many different driving situations.

This is my first auto and honestly the only reason I would want to clutch again would be with a proper RWD sports car on a track.

I use the shifters when deceling at stoplights.... Very fun to play around with on boring drives....
