Hi
I was thinking of getting my 1.8tq chipped but as I understand that voids the warrenty. I have heard that you can just buy another ecu and switch it in for service and such, but is that really feasible? how much would a new ecu(or could I get one out of a junked 1.8t if I could find one) cost and would it affect the odo? thanks for any help you guys can give me.

Dad's Auto recycling will sell you one from a wreck for around $400 for a 1.8T or $500 for a 2.8 30V, I believe.

but I do not think that switching the ECU is much value. The dealer can easily
determine that the power has been disconnected. Thus, without much of a
stretch the dealer could assert that you have chipped your car and make things
difficult. It is more important that you know your warranty rights (and keep your
chipped car well maintained) than to hide the fact that the car is chipped.

Even if the dealer detects loss of power...so what? What does that mean? If i went on a long trip, i would disconnect the battery. Dealers can't assert anything from loss of power...it isn't direct evidence of a chip if you put the stock ECU (with loss of power fault) back in when you go in for service.
I agree with you that knowing your warranty rights, and maintenance are important, but why not just return your ECU to stock when going in for service? Just a thought...=)

which may lead to hostility from the dealer in handling a warranty claim. For instance, it sure would seem odd if you brought your car in for a warranty claim (which, arguably could be attributable to the performance chip) and the dealer detected a recent power interruption code. IMHO it is better to be honest with the dealer.

I agree that if the car has a blown turbo and looks very " modifyed" that the dealer might be less willing to cooperate but a stock A4 that looks mellow...?

Another reason to have a spare cpu is to prevent your new modified
chip from being flash reprogrammed by the dealer due to some
audi update, etc

Weren't they the ones complaining about the use of the older "M" (or "P", I forget which on eit is) series ECU's a few weeks ago?

to void your coverage like a chip, oversize tires, airbag sticker off( just kidding on last one) . I feel you should protect youself and not believe the dealer is such a straight shooter. Anyway I installed a subwoffer and disconnected the power. So is he going to think I've chipped my car when I haven't?
