I was driving at night in San Jose when a cop noticed my tinted windows and pulled me over. I'm now thinking of getting a lighter shade of tint like 50; I currently have 35 all the way around. Does anyone recommend this setup? 35 at night looks REALLY dark, especially with a black interior

i had 50%ish tint on my a4 until about a month ago. it wasnt dark enough, not even close. during the day it barely made a difference. the sun would radiate right thru the tint, leaving the interior steaming hot. at night, the tint was almost non-existant as well. sure it looked darker, but everyone could clearly see what i was up to inside my car.
i opted to go down to 35% and im pretty satisfied.
i wish they would make a true 42% tint so that it would take into account the factory tint.. and still be legal =)

A4s, as with most new cars, come from the factory with a 50% tint (approx.) Therefore, 35% on top of 50% tint = illegal. However, 50% tint over 50% tint = Legal.. This is the set up I have on my silver with onyx interior. I tested ith with a light meter at the tint shop. Resulted in maximum legal tint in NY almost exactly. The tint is nice and dark at night. During the day however, its not really dark enough. BUT I will never have to worry about the legality. (my .02)

Most tint manufacturers only offer tints at certain levels, ie) 50%, 35%, and 27%.--no in between Thus, to be on the safe side go wtih 50%. The difference is negligible. FWIW I wish my tints were darker at times. Here in NYC, the cops tend to not care but have widespread crackdowns usually once a year for about a week. (I guess its a revenue maker for them or something) Then the're places like New Jersey which don't allow you to have any tint on your front door windows.

I said approximately 50%, I had it measured with a light meter before my tint job, I could be wrong however, as my memory is not that great and I had my A4 tinted 3 years ago. Regardless, what I have sure is that Factory% + 50% tint = maximum legal tint.
