Just got back from AEM headquarters in Hawthorne, CA today. They used my 2.0t DSG for a testfit of a new cold air intake system. I got a preproduction model that's all chrome, which won't actually be produced. I have the only chrome one in existence!
As for the performance bump, I got +15 whp --- WHEEL horsepower. I can definitely hear the difference too - more aggressive sound. At lower rpms (2-3k), I can hear the turbo spooling up and the blow off valve going off SIGNIFICANTLY louder than before. I've never had a cold air intake on a turbocharged car before; is the sound of the turbo resonated that much more ? I'm used to the deep throaty sound that an intake makes for a normally aspirated engine rather than the echo of the turbo spooling up that this intake makes.

No, they didn't. On my old Honda, it was about $200, so I'm guessing around there.

I'd be more inclined to believe that the +15hp is BS than believe that the AEM compromises filtration.
Maybe +15hp is possible at some point in the power curve if you're comparing a dirty stock filter with a clean dryflow + intake.

there is a TSB regarding an issue with the stock airbox assembly... which is rectified by replacing the airbox, filter, maf and pretty engine cover too. Problem has to do with the filter not seating correctly resulting in an issue with airflow.
So yeah... did you have a good airbox to begin with, I bet if you tested the early faulty airbox against that AEM setup there is a chance of an increase in HP.

if not expect it to be more expensive due to a limited market.

they told me that they were making one with the gti, but it fits a little bit different because of the gti's different engine compartment

As for the claimed hp increase, I don't know what part of the power curve it's on, but I definitely do feel a noticeable bump up in performance. I was shocked at the numbers too, I was expecting around 5-8 hp. They showed me the dyno charts on the computer but didn't give me a printout of it.

and vw likely sells a few times that many golf GTI units.

If it's an 06 it could be a year old... that is unless you have a april or may 2006 build date as per the driver's door jamb. The 06 for us began production earlier in 05 than usual.
I'm not certain of the date range affected by the airbox issue... it is not beyond the boundaries of possibilities that you had a bad one and the results of replacing it with this intake were thusly exaggerated.

You're not the only polished intake.
We had a little gtg over the weekend and saw a GTI with this same kit, polished.
He claimed +14whp as well, but no dyno number to show it.
His GTi was a 6-speed.
