Not much of a technical person, so maybe someone can enlighten here:

I know the DSG is new and there is no historical data on it, but between DSG and Manual, which one is more likely to fail first? Estimate replacement costs in terms of % more it would cost to replace/fix DSG vs Manual (not actual $$, just percent estimate).

A manual is simpler, but then my manual transmission in brand new A3 was bad from day one (wouldn't shift into 5th), and had to be replaced.

As for cost to fix, it depends on what is broken. Have to look through the parts list and price things out yourself. Same for labour costs. Dealer should have the times to R&R various things.

If you're in North America, it's covered for the first 4 years/50K miles.

It may be aggravating if the DSG turns out to be a problematic transmission (which I hope it doesn't), but I'll have it covered and I'll have a rental.

If you do plan to keep it longer, better invest in an extended warranty.

Some cars had to be fixed at the port or something. (?) I hope the new search tool will find the old posts on the TT forum. :)

They will just be replaced even out of warranty I dont' see Audi supply many of the parts to repair them. Similar to what they do with Automatics. And then even if they do supply the parts they NEVER offer training courses.

VW for example only time you can get into the Automatic trans course if if you are int he fast track, and I think audi is similar. Fast track is for people off the street who know nothing, they just send them to school for like 3 weeks straight then come back and expect them to work on cars. These are not the people you'd want or the dealer would even have working on these transmissions.. I tried for years to get into the automatic classes with VW.. couldn't get in.

The nice thing is that the DSG is essentially a specially packaged double clutch manual. Once people do document the peculiarities of the system, things will move forward. The TT people have a few years on us.

There are now a number of independent ZF transmission rebuilders who will work on the Audi versions of the regular Tiptronic - for which as you know, was originally impossible to find an independent repair facility.
