I was thinking of asking my local garage (non-Audi) to do an ECU reset (disconnecting battery). Would the Concert radio need the radio id number put in when the battery is reconnected? I'm asking because the previous owner lost the radio card and I've didn't ask Audi for it, as they now charge for recovering the number (it used to be free).

When I changed the battery on my A3 recently, my Audi Delta head unit, to my surprise, didn't seem to mind at all and didn't ask for a security code when I switched it on afterwards. I'm not sure why not...the electric windows needed their one-touch action recalibrated though.
