Hi I need some advice, I test drove An A3 1.8T 2002 today, Everything was fine except I could hear the Turbo Spin fron inside the car whilst driving. Its not a very loud noise, its more of a faint whistle,
I have driven othe A3's and not noticed the Turbo Before.

I want to buy this car so my question is: Could this be a problem or is it a characteristic?

P.S. The car is for sale in an Audi main Dealers & comes with 1 Years warrentee.

I bought an April 2001 A3T back in March this year, 27k on the clock.

I know exactly the sound you mean. I usually have music on, so don't hear it.
Generally I hear the whine of the turbo spin up at about 2.2-2.5k revs and the 'phhiiuuzzzz' release of the dump valve whenever I come off the accelerator to change gear. It's not a LOUD noise, but I can hear it when there is no music on. I wondered if it was worn, but it seems to be fine.

This is the first turbo car I have owned, so I wouldn't mind hearing from other members myself.

PS- Is it worth upgrading from the standard A3T DV to the TT DV from the same engine? It's only a cheap part, so wondered if the mod makes any difference between gears?

I doubt it, I replaced my one with a £100 forge one and to be honest I havnt really noticed any difference apart from the noise it makes. I've just serviced my forge and I put in the old bosch one and the car seems better...may just be me, I would say if your ones fails (they seem to happen quite alot) then I would replace it with an uprated one then.

and it's got that Turbo whine which I actually like. I reckon it's normal

I also bought a 2001 A3 1.8T (67000km) about 5 months ago. Mine also has the whistle sound from 2200 - 2500 rpm's and it's quite loud when the radio is off obviously. I also thought that it's weird, but since you guys also have it I think it's normal. Mine "flutters" as well when I lift off the throttle, is that normal ? It sounds like short bursts or somethin' , difficult to explain ...
