out of curiousity, what are the sunroofs like on the S3s - specifically are they noisy when open and travelling at speeds meaning that the only real practical use for the roof is tilt only? ive noticed this to be worse in small hatches than in say bmw coupes so i thought id ask?

The sunroof is extremely noisy at about 60km/h (i.e. normal cruising speed) if the roof is fully opened. At least AUDI knew that, and has noted on the switch a position where you can hardly hear anything, which is, if i remember correctly, about 2 "clicks" less than fully open. I usually use it at that position, unless i am cruising at higher speeds.
Other than that, i am very happy with the suroof, and would advise you to get that option as well.

It is extremely noisy at high speeds, you can absolutely not hear anything else but loud wind noise. I usually use it in the tilt position. I suggest you should go for this option as it brings a very large amount of light into the interior, especially during cloudy days. And if you are smoking, your roof lining does not get that dirty because of the smoke (btw I don't smoke).

noticed noise in hatches with roof to be worse at 60kmph. i understand that it is in the design of the car, but the performance of some manafacturers cars should border on downright deceptive. Regardless of what they sound like, i would order a roof and 95% of the time i would only use to tilt function. i was very impressed with e36 m3 roof though.
