I got my s3 5 days ago and i think its great i made 500kilometers so far and my only questions are do i have to be carefull with the car in the first 1000 k or should i drive it normally as the dealer told me and if so when do i have to change oils for the first time? and is it normal to hear some noise from the sunroof after 160km/h. I would appriciate any info on both subjects.

I don't hear any noise from the sunroof even after 180 km/h. Do you hear the sound when the sunroof is open? Is it a mechanical sound or a whisting sound?

My dealer told me to be careful in the first 400 km's (I did not pay any attention to this) and not to push hard when the engine is cold (my car is 1600km old and I'm still driving below 3000 rpm when the engine is cold), which I think makes perfect sense. I also wait couple of minutes to cool the turbo down after I parked the car, always. The oil change comes only after 15000 km's, at least that's what I've been told here. But don't ever forget to do regular oil checks as new cars tend to consume some oil.

Hope you have great time in your S3

Thanks for the message. The sound comes when the glass is closed and the interior cover is open and comes from the wind. Althougth its bareable i think that it is unaceptable thats why earlier today i visited my dealer who assured me that in case the sound gets worse or it doesnt stop (cause they told me that it might stop when the rubber border will sit firmly on the glass after some use) they will change the rubbers (guarantee) and that will do it they had a similar case with an A3 1.6 2 months ago.
As far as the first oil change i plan to make 1000 k and then change them, despite Ingolstadt's circulars. I now strongly beleive that the S3 should be availiable only in Black color.

Hi,
You say you always cool S3 turbo down. I suppose by idling for few minutes? I've heard turbo owners talk about it in the past but nothing recently and nothing regarding the latest Audi water-cooled turbo. Alsio there is no reference to that in the owners manual. Could you please expand on the benefits of cooling the turbo down, i.e. when, how and why and dangers of not doing so?
Thanks,

There should be no need for a cool down period with the water cooled turbos but it does seem a kind thing to do and it must help to run for a couple of minutes especially if it has been running fast and hard.
It is the same with the new engines , I always run them in for at least five thousand kilometers before using the upper rev range.

Hello Jopet,

I think it would be a big mistake to change your oil at 1000k ... There was a discussion in the alt.autos.audi newsgroup a while back about this topic, and the guys there said that that you should NOT change the oil before the recommended period (7500miles?). The reason for that is that, apparently, Audi ships all cars with a special mixture of engine oil (including some minerals) to help set the piston rings in place and form a good seal with the piston cylinder. If you change the oil too early, you could have oil leaks in the future!

Why would you want to change it that quickly anyways? Any special reasons?

Regards,

Loukas

I also know bits and pieces. The minute you turn off your engine the oil pressure drops and this can cause wear problems at the turbo as it continues to spin at very high rpm even after you turn off the engine.

I'm sure other guys in the forum can give you a much detailed answer.

Just make sure that you are putting an oil with this specification vw 503 01 in your S3
