Anybody upgraded the speakers in the A3? The Bose in our A4 is great but the A3 only has the standard system ( It was a stock vehicle but I did get a really good deal ).
I do not wish to spend loads of money and replacements must fit under the existing grilles.
Magnat/MacAudio or Phoenix Gold have been suggested at about £180 & £220 respectively plus about £70 for fitting ( the door trim has to be totally dismantled )
I have also been advised that Infinity are also ok and reasonably priced ?
Phoenix Gold are American, perhaps one of our U.S. collegues can confirm or supply site details ? Thanks.
My Audi dealer sold me a pair of Votex (VW/Audi tuning company) speakers. Don't know who makes them for Votex, but they sound very good. They sell for the equivalent of GBP120.- in NZ.
A3's factory speakers are not bad at all. They are designed to suit the acoustics of the car, door panels etc, but the base units are small for decent output and they are of unusual diameter so your aftermaket option are limited. The more expensive upgrade may not achieve a better quality sound. I installed mine before taking the delivery, but I think its was a marginal improvement only.
I am still thinking what to do, but probably will end up installing a separate bass unit behing the rear seats. More bass is all that A3 needs.

I own a '98 A3 1.8T and I replaced the original factory speakers at front with the same upgrading kit from Votex. The sound is much better. Better bass and much better midrange and treble. I have also a set of speakers at the back. I did not order them from factory but installed a set of MBQuart (German). You certainly get a lot bass from these. Perhaps a little too much in the upper bass area, but if you have a advanced carstereo head unit then it is possible to "fix" this.

Infinity BETA 1 and BETA 5 on the factory places in frot doors.
BETA 1 had to be completely stripped off everything to fit in the place, but it is a very large tweeter.
BETA 5 needed some plastic removing from the door panel but from the insde so it is invisible.
Sounds absolutely great! They are a bit expensive though.
