All,

I too saw the S3 sitting in the back of the service dept. at Leith Audi.

I jumped out to take as look as I was blown away to see one in the US.

The car is in need of some big-time work. The driver's side front is missing (spare in its place) and the rear wheel is cracked all the way around the rim separating it into two pieces.

I talk to the mechanic who is working on it and he said that the car came in on a flat bed after a little off-road miss-hap. Seems the 6 speed gear box is also cracked (along with other less expensive parts on the underbody).

A new gearbox is on order from Germany. Seems the owner (a *student* at Duke) had to come up with the proper papers in order for Audi to even ship the gearbox over here.

The car does not have any state inspection tags on it but the S3 does have NC plates one it.

What a strange, strange story. But alas, it is true.

There was also an S3 on Microsoft Campus (building 13). Most of these cars were brought over under the student/work overseas rules. I believe the limit for keeping a Eurospec car in the U.S. is two years under these limitations.

There are a couple dozen in the U.S. under similar circumstances, most likely.
