View Full Version : Uneven power at WOT: any ideas what the problem may be?

I have noticed when putting the accelerator to the floor, I often experience uneven power. The car accelerates but the power does not seem very smooth (it seems to oscillate and is not constant).

This seems most apparant in highway driving (e.g., accelerating in 4th gear or 5th gear) especially when going uphill.

I don't seem to experience this problem (or it is less apparant) in 1st through 3rd gears.

I have a 99 1.8T quattro with a K&N air filter I recently installed and an APR 1.0 bar chip. I haven't tried swapping back the stock ECU yet.

Everything else is great. I'm getting great power in the car. The APR chip has been incredible. I love the extra power.

Thanks in advance!

I had similar problems. I sent the ECU back to APR. They changed the program and sent it back to me. Everything seems fine now and their customer service was excellent.

...knocking. are you using high octane gas? If you are, then you may want to have the chip modified so that it doesn't advance the timing as much. That is, of course, if that's what's happening. If you aren't using high octane gas, then that would be the first change to make, but I'm sure you are already aware of the need for high octane with the chip. HTH! :-)

the more pronounced turbo lag that occurs when you chip your car. When you hit WOT the chip will spool to maximum boost between 3000-5000RPM. I believe that it's normal. What I've noticed is that if you floor the pedal, over 3500 RPM you get a huge rush of power.

You didn't even read what he wrote. Wayne describes oscillation or unsteady power delivery. Turbo lag doesn't oscillate.

Wayne describes the exact problems I had. The power delivery would feel ragged like the ignition was cutting for quick, short times. I also felt a bit of surging.

Like I said, call APR. Mine seems fine now.

When I first chipped the car, I was using 94 octane fuel. However, during a long trip, I had to refuel and I was only able to obtain 91 octane fuel (about 2 refills ago). But my latest refuel was using 92 octane fuel.

The weather has been relatively cool here (20C/68F).

I will contact APR and go back to the 94 octane fuel and see if things change.

Thanks for everyone's help!

If this does not do the trick then the timing can be backed off slightly. Feel free to give us a call if you have any questions.

Turbo lag does not increase when chipped, its a physical impossibility. a turbo spools the same regardless of what timing, boost, etc is present. people may get a percieved lag, which means, since the on power rush is greater, the off power rush seems diminished. in either case, its irrelevant, what he feels is the timing back off.
