I've just test driven both the A4 1.8 and 2.8 versions, and would like some advice.
My plan is to upgrade the factory engine whichever I purchase.
It looks like there are a bunch of options on the aftermarket for the 1.8, and less for the 2.8; yet, the 2.8 should offer the better performance in the long run.
Is there experience with these engines?? Which to buy??

Having just bought a 2.8 I would have to say go the 2.8 route. I also test drove the 1.8T but preferred the smooth power of the 2.8. There is also less of the high RPM noise when driving. More of a throaty growl. Mated to a 5 speed and with Quattro, its a lot of fun.
It seems though the chipped 1.8T's can be made to be more powerful than the 2.8. Kind of curious about the reliability of the engines if their being over boosted. Turbos tend to be higher maintenance as well.

I just test drove both models as well this weekend back to back.
If you drive a lot in the city, the 1.8 is great for quick acceleration. However, the 2.8 felt smoother and better suited for highway driving.
If you like the sound of revs, then go for the 1.8. If you like the smooth sounds and effortless power of a six (as I did), get the 2.8

How much power do you want? How long do you plan on keeping the car? How much money can you afford to throw at it? Are you planning on doing the work yourself, or do you have a knowledgeable and experienced Audi tuning shop in mind? Also, what application are you going to use it for: street only, street and track, track only? Will this be your only car? All of these are important questions which must be addressed to give you a good answer.
For strictly street applications and a little more power (220 hp range) I would say the 1.8t is hands down the best bet, but things get much hazier after that and specifics become more important.
