About 3 times more border on the right side than the left.

Everything in the message window, exept the "Thread:" area is in a 600 wide table. If you have your browser window set wider than 600 you will always have more space on the right than on the left. I think it works the same way on the existing format, although I could be wrong.

Of course if your image is larger than 600 wide than it will stretch out the table to whatever width your image is.
