I've got a 99.5, the color is Light Silver, NOT Aluminum Silver.
New color, 5B5B. Parts dept told me the touchup paint won't be produced or available until the 1st quarter of Y2K....
Anyone else confirm or deny this? Can I get touchup paint anywhere that matches????

Christine, getting little rock chippies on the hood & roof on my new baby :(
THANKS!

I put a big gouge in my rear bumper, and went in to get the touchup paint. After checking the code (which was a bit different from yours if i remember correctly -- "7-Y-something-something") in the spare wheel well, they put in an order for it last week.

I went in to the dealer yesterday and it wasn't there yet, so who knows if it really exists or not. I asked if they were sure it existed, and the parts guy said yes, but he probably has no more idea than we do.

I think the parts guy said it was "Lake Silver Metallic", not "Light Silver Metallic."

I assume the new color is exactly the same as the Volkswagen silver on the Beetle, Passat, Jetta etc. making this wait all the more frustrating.

so I've been trying to figure out what to do this winter i.e. buy a set of all seasons or buy a set for just winter. Since I know you'll be making the same trek to Tahoe I was wondering what you'll be doing and maybe give me some ideas.

Normally I do a bunch of hwy driving and don't do much autocross stuff. I know it's going to cost me about 500 big pesos either way. If I go with an all season set I want to get one that gives me some performance and, of course snow grip. If I go with a seperate set of winters, the tires aren't all that much but the added wheels, covers etc. would probably get it to 500.

Anyway, just thought I'd start getting ideas/recommendations from others that live in the SF bay area that go looking for snow on the weekends. =)

Thanks,
Ed

I've called 2 aftermarket distributors- Color Rite and Duplicolor, neither has it yet.
I wonder if the VW color is the EXACT same- remember the pre 99.5's were "aluminum silver" which is close, but not exact. Sometimes they vary the paint just a teensy bit from Audi to VW. I will try that also, though- may be easier to find...

What part # did you find in the wheelwell for the color light silver? My dealer told me 5B5B (off the invoice) was the color code, but I may be misinformed there as well.

I personally will use the Dunlop 8000 Sports until the snow is realllly deep, then think about buying a specifically winter set of tires, and inexpensive (VW?) rims to mount them on.
I've done only 2 Tahoe trips in this car, one with about 3" on the ground (some ice too) in South Shore, and one bone dry (ahhh spring skiing just before Memorial Day) and had no problems, but I've seen many many complaints about the stock sport package tires in the snow.

Hmmm guess we need 3 sets of tires-
1 everyday set
1 winter/ Tahoe set
1 racing/ autoX set

Should've bought that Avant now, to tote all them tires around...

it a few months ago and they originally gave me the paint for the Alum. Silver. They then got this Touch up set with the above part #. Under the description it's called Lake Silver.

I've a 99.5 Lt. Silver....

to place an order anyway. HMMM where are you? I'm in Northern Cal, and 2 dealers here said that part # doesn't show up on the system, but one went ahead and attempted to order it anyway. I'll know next week if it works.
THANKS!!!!

One dealer told me there was no such color even though I kept explaining that there was a difference between Aluminum and Light silver. I got fed up with their ignorant stupidity and asked another dealer instead...

You're gonna have to give them the color code for the 1999.5 Light Silver A4 which is... "LY7W". They might have to back order it though.
