Honestly, from what I know about that engine, it's already putting out pretty close to it's full potential. It is a full aluminum block/head assembly, and has 4 independent variable cams. 220 hp for 3 liters isn't bad, roughly 73 hp/liter. I think, the reason there's no chip out for it, is to adjust the ignition & fueling curves, you also have to play with the cam advances on this engine, and that multiplies the complexity of it quite a bit. Chip tuners are probably scared to touch it, and IMO, there's not much to be gained anyways. akula-ssh 11-21-2004, 10:33 AM You're looking at around 10-15hp and similar amount of torque increase at the crank. JWG 11-21-2004, 08:23 PM which is not bad without other induction mods. Basically, you need to look at induction mods more than chips, because you want to get more hp out of a normally aspirated car. This means maximizing air flow from the inlet to the intake manifold, because it starts getting really expensive to mod past the intake manifold on those big, complex 30v heads. At least, 12v'ers have more aggressive OEM cams that they can source cheap off the AAH version of the engine. You will likely have to put some big bucks into custom ground cams for the 30v. The biggest hurdle you will run into is the fact that Audi uses extensive and high-end computer-aided design beginning with the 2.8 30v. CAD cuts down on materials and maximizes the intended engineering design. Unfortunately, you want to engineer the car much differently than Audi's engineers do. In this way, the lowly 12v is a superior normally aspirated platform to mod upon. Due to the lack of sophisticated CAD, the 12v has a lot of extra metal that you may grind away. Thus, full porting the 12v can get you up to 230-250 hp depending on much you invest in light weight parts and making OEM parts lighter. Go with a full race ECU and a full rebuild and you will likely enjoy a very responsive 300+ hp with no turbo lag. Mance Etheredge started playing with mods for the 30v, namely with getting air to the intake manifold by improving the MAF, the hoses to the plenum, and porting the throttle body. Unfortunately, he is too busy with making his little old 1995 Audi 90 12v into a S4/M3 killer. You may need to check back with him after the spring when he's done with his 90. I hope to eventually mod my wife's A6 2.8 30v with Mance's stuff someday. Stuff for the 3.0 30v will likely involve nearly the same types of mods due to the similarity it has with the 2.8 30v.
