View Full Version : Does anyone know where I could get some chip sockets?

Figured I'd ask first before I try and make some.

Or they might be kinda protective of their "technology".

I can get some parts here and there, but not an assembled board.

If it is then you can try asking if you can buy some of their stock chip socket boards which you can just solder the chip to but still be able to remove it off the legs.

which I am not.

mostly because they have extra leads (usually) that go to the encryption chip.

you could easily design your own circuit (read: copy) on autocad and send the DXF to a board manufacturer. then buy standoffs/sockets from digikey and solder them together. EdP did this for his vag-com interface he made.

OR the cheap way is to etch your own board, but that will definately be larger and not as neat as a professionally fabbed board.

I highly doubt you will be able to get a pre-made board plus socket cheaply from someone. they are not off the shelf items.

Figure out what you need....

it is used for the stock chip so you remove the GIAC chip and put the stock one back in. The older verion looked like your picture and the newer one was just one side that put the chip right over the legs that are soldered to the ecu.

can't remember who it was through though, maybe AWE?

ask me how I know :)

I'd like to get just a regular board, encryption would be nice, but for my use, it's not really necessary. If I start selling nonDBW chips, I might think about it though.

Would you need the pins to solder on the board or just the board.

I'm looking for a couple though.

Steve Millen wanted like $700 for their ECU upgrade. I found out they'd sell me the chip for like $200, but I had to take care of the socketing myself. I found a local electronics supplier that had all configurations imaginable for chips.

I think they charged me like $40 to desolder the chip and solder in the socket.

We have one complete, for sale with a chip, for a 1.8t. Uh, don't think it'd be smart for us to sell just part of it though ;-)

Open source would rule. It would make all the "tuners" focus on making better hardware or better systems

I decompiled my stock chip, compared it to a couple aftermarket chips, and figured out what a lot of the maps are.

However, it's taken me MONTHS to get that far, and I'm just scratching the surface.

I'd love to get some help, but unless there are other people out there that understand microprocessor assembly code, and how it relates to the ECU hardware, it would be very tough to go further, and it would hinder my progress if I had to show everyone what I've done.

were a lot easier to do, but he does microprocessor design for IBM. So...thoughts on making a collective community effort?

assuming we can get at least a couple people together who kinda know what they're doing.

We could start a yahoogroup or something, unless you've got any other suggestions.

Something like a forum, and maybe like web-x
Who else would be interested in such endevors? Know of anyone? Should we hit up the AW forums?

I was researching this a while ago. I have a few from different vendors. One is a coffin type, another has a clip that traps the chip in the socket. These are both sockets that accept the stock Flash. I can take pictures if you want.

I found the type of socket that GIAC uses, made by Yaimichi, and I've got a sample of one from Meritec, which is a coffin-type.

If you've got others, I'd be interested in pics.
