View Full Version : Need clutch help, x-post Liam in Montreal 09-05-2002, 11:10 AM

post in a4 forum

Audiboy 09-05-2002, 11:40 AM When stepping on it for the 1st time, press halfway, does it disengage the clutch (shifting possible) ? Then when you continue all the way down, the clutch engages (shifting impossible)? Then as you go back up, keeping it halfway 1st, is the clutch still engaged? (shifting impossible) or regardless of what's been done to the pedal, as long as the pedal is in the middle, shifting is possible? What happened when your clutch broke, was it a broken clutch disk or pressure plate? I'm betting if you past the halfway point, the fluid bleeds out of the master cylinder and the slave cylinder releases, so the clutch engages itself back (shifting impossible) and won't disengage unless you pump it again. Meaning your master cylinder is hosed. The construction of the slave cylinder makes me think it is not the problem. Hope they bled it properly. Liam in Montreal 09-05-2002, 11:45 AM thanks for the info, I will pass it on. Audiboy 09-05-2002, 11:48 AM lets the fluid out carefully and only part of it to not damage seals. Each time the fluid goes out, the clutch pedal drops, so the guy pumping much reach and grab it and repeat. Best to use a low pressure bleeder or mighty vac bleeder on the clutch though since the system is so small and has no restriction (like the ABS and proportioning valves of the brake system) Liam in Montreal 09-05-2002, 04:03 PM any idea on ballpark price for that thing? Audiboy 09-06-2002, 08:36 AM The new ones are plastic and fixed shaft probably about the same price. Unfortunately, because of the line fitting, they are not interchangeable. That's US price btw ;) good luck. Tbandido 09-06-2002, 07:27 PM The pilot bearing supports the transmission input shaft into the engine crankshaft. If this bearing is damaged at all it can essentially fuse the engine to transmission making shifting all but impossible and the clutch seem at fault. Raise the car and push the clutch pedal...if the clutch fork is moving, then it most likely the pilot bearing. Good luck Liam in Montreal 09-09-2002, 04:22 AM |
