View Full Version : Sorry - it's the turbo...

...the damn CRHA has so much play in it that the wheels are able to make contact in the housings. At first glance, the turbo spins freely but after further examination, it looks as if I do, indeed, have a blown turbo.

Oh well, at least we now know what the ECU does when the turbo is bad.

Thanks for everyone's help,
Mike O.

P.S. anyone need a paperweight?

These are essentially oil bearing turbos. Hammer them without taking good care of the oil and they will die ASAP.

...for the winter. The car has less than 4000 miles on it since the switch.

This is the first time I've used anything but Mobil-1 15/50. I have been getting some lifter tick and figured that the lighter oil would cure that (it did) and help with cold start up wear.

Did the 10/30 cause the turbo to fail? I doubt it. Did it indirectly shorten the life of the turbo? Maybe. Suffice to say that I will only use 15/50 from now on.

I have literally 100's of thousands of miles on overboosted turbos on 5w30 synthetic. But if you are romping the crap out of it all the time, it probably is helping you as far as life of the part goes.

the wear and tear for sure. I have been using 10W-30 for the winters and 15W-50's from late spring to fall for the last 4 1/2 years since I bought it new and its still going. Do you let the car idle for a few minutes after a spritied sessions?

...first do you have any more info on the K04-26. My hybrid was probably as close to that thing as any turbo could be (although my turbine wheel was probably a little bigger). I bought a K04-15 for now but would be interested in getting back the performance/efficiency of my K04/16G. Do you know if the K04-26 has a bigger shaft? Any info on availability and cost would be greatly appreciated.

Secondly, I do let the car idle for several minutes (10 minutes at the track) so I am sure this has helped.

TIA,
Mike O.

You can try to contact the place I bought from Germany, Turbo Tapp. Sorry, I do not have any technical info on this turbo. Lastly, glad you let the motor idle after a nice run at the track, but 5 minutes idling is more than enough.
