View Full Version : Go Ford Explorer.... JimV 09-23-1999, 05:01 AM

. Pointed out the irony that many people just throw a few bucks at environmental concerns to make themselves feel better. Looks like another example - I'll donate $1.50 for this bumper sticker and slap it on my super duty pickup getting less than 15mpg while I drive around with air in the box. Let me tell you this thing gulps gas like you would not belive when you push hard on the vroom pedal. My sollution (I'm a bit of an Earth flake, and NO the truck is NOT mine) when I drive it keep the accelerations SLLLOOWWW. pdw 09-23-1999, 07:12 AM An A4 1.8T with a chip and a heavy-footed driver probably doesn't get much better mileage than an Explorer. What you're doing makes a lot of sense. Sean T 09-23-1999, 07:25 AM nt Rodney 09-23-1999, 07:30 AM The worst mileage I've heard of an A4 1.8t (chipped or otherwise) getting is about 10 mpg, and that was due to use on a race track in a high speed driver's ed event. My worst, unchipped for now, was about 15mpg due to autocrossing. I have tracked my mileage since day one and even in strictly city driving being VERY agressive I get around 17-18 mpg (normal conditions I average 22mpg); as chipping does not hurt gas mileage, sometimes improves it, I must conclude that this mileage will continue. My point being that your assumption of SUV/Truck like mileage is incorrect except in the most extreme circumstances (track). That said, I agree with your statement that in general it's better to be gentle with the go pedal most of the time. To put it another way, the chip gives the 1.8T the ability to use more fuel. You are probably right but my point is that there's a lot of people on this board complaining about SUV gas mileage and then doing everything they can to use more gas with the car they have. I'm as guilty as the rest since my car is chipped. I just don't complain about SUV gas mileage. |
