I started discussing the possibilities of a turbo upgrade in my 2000 S4 with a local tuner(this guy runs 8 second supras) and he said that KKK turbochargers are old technology. Is this true? I am debating going stage3 in my car with APR now because they plan to use a Garret blower. If I am gonna drop MORE money into the car I want the best stuff. And it seems like the other turbos will make more power..... Anyone got any info??

They HAVE some newer vaning types, but the fundementals are still sleeved oil bearings based on those original ones. The K03/4 rely on the oil as a bearing surface (sleeve bearing) with high oil pressure and relative volume.
Garrett Turbos are newer, dating to the early 90's, and are ball bearing and don't use much oil in the lubrication.

Even the ball bearing turbos are based on old tech turbos. I'm sure I could go back and find the post where someone bitched at me because I said the GT 25's were a new design, unrelated to Garrett's older turbos, but hey, I was wrong. The GT-25, spare the ball bearing shaft is not all that new (and hell, even ball bearing turbos have been around for awhile...IHI bb turbos powered Formula 1's back in the day.)

Doesn't mean it's not modern because it's fundementals are based on something old. I'd put it in the "modern" category if the design substantially changes in a way that separates the design performance from the older one. With that, the K04 is still "old design", since it still uses with little design change, the 1950's approach to lubricaton, shaft support, and vane design. They DO have some newer K04 designs with variable vaning and such, so they may inch towards a more modern design.
The Garrett (admittedly from their PR specs and rhetoric), is a design overhaul, with ballbearings, vaning redesign, and variable pitch.
There's not much in basic principle behind the components in a turbo, it's all in the execution.

And what does anything in my post have to do with APR? Where do I say they are the only place to get one? Kind enough to also tell me where there's another place to get A4 manifolds that support the GT25's different bolt patterns? And also the other stuff to make it work on a 2000 DBW?
Not sure your temperment to my post as I have never dug into you, buddy. Got issues?

Stage 3 kit: pre-existing for the most part
some adaption for:
-DBW (mostly figured out with their chips alone)
-injectors
-some miscellaneous hardware...
not that tough to do really...unless there are some suprises

not going to trunk my car all the way from California to have them work on it for the week they said it would take. I know there was no way that they could get it right in 5 days.

Ed elected to WAIT for an alternative fuel injector that had to be shipped from Germany. The 2000+ cars use Bosch EV12 type fuel injectors, the 1997-199.5 cars use EV6 type fuel injectors. The various styles are for the most part interchangable and will make no noticable difference in the performance of the vehicle. The same injector that we have chosen for the 97-99.5 cars is fine for the 2000+ cars and this was the injector that was to be used on the car. At the last minute an alternative EV12 type injector was found that would work with the kit. Ed elected to wait for that injector although they had to be shipped from Germany. That was his choice and consequently the project was delayed.
Now you know some of the facts.
