View Full Version : OT: Saab came in second at Pikes Peak with 780hp Viggen?!? RichMN 11-10-2000, 09:23 AM I ran across this paging through some auto mag. Jesus, 780hp from 2 liters? How is that possible? What does Audi get out of its modified 1.8t engines? Clark@turbo5.com 11-10-2000, 09:49 AM carace 11-10-2000, 10:53 AM Millen was getting over 1,000hp from his GTP based four cylinder. Besides, the SAAB got beat by a TRUCK in a slower class. Old turbo formula 1 cars at the end were getting close to 1,500hp in qualifying from 1.5litre sixes and fours. Now we are talking about boost! freedom 11-10-2000, 10:53 AM Audiboy 11-10-2000, 11:59 AM Kevin K2 11-10-2000, 12:04 PM stock 2L engine puts out 185 hp at 12 psi.

Specs

PWR 11-10-2000, 12:22 PM according to the article in European Car. This Saab is Per Eklund's rallycross vehicle and the engine is built by a company by the name of Trollspeed. Also, Per Eklund was a former Audi works rally driver in the 80's. He rallied the original A1 series Quattro Coupe. PS: Trolls a part of Scandinavian folklore. RichMN 11-10-2000, 01:03 PM How can you compress the air with that much boost and cool it sufficiently so it doesn't cause detonation problems. Are they using some kind of water injection? Audiboy 11-10-2000, 03:14 PM Clark@turbo5.com 11-10-2000, 05:03 PM Low compression motor. 10,000 rpm stable. Huge turbo, tons of fuel.. For fun I worked out max hp on a 1.8t engine just now. If you can get an effecient turbo and a good IC system 957hp was possible at that rpm. Getting the thing to hold together would be another story.. This is just math.. Clark James R. 11-10-2000, 08:07 PM berkel 11-11-2000, 08:07 AM I was lined up next to a SAAB 900 from the mid 80s. Looked totally stock, but very clean. I was in a cocky mood, so I casually ask the guy what he runs, since I was confident that my GSR with 75 HP NOS kit was going to spank him (13 second car FWD on street tires). He says "12s." I asked how much boost, and I think he said "25 psi" or something like that. He popped the hood and he had a large ball-bearing turbo, front-mount IC, etc. He had build the bottom-end with cunningham rods, JE pistons, etc. Headwork, etc. He had dynoed with 380 HP or so at the wheels. I'm not sure on exact numbers, but suffice to say, it was a LOT! The 12's were on slicks, he was "only" running 13s or so with this street tires. BTW, he asked about my car, and as I was telling him about the N20, I notice his hat: "Charlestown Police." Yep, he was a police officer from RI. I started babbling something about not driving with N20 on the street, but he said he didn't care, lol. Take care, FB 2000 A4 1.8TQMSX - K&N, APR, Bailey 1995 GSR Sedan - Shooting for 200 HP at the wheels all motor.
