I'm new, and I've got a lot of questions so please bear with me.
I'm considering the purchase of a 98-00 A4 1.8tQ but after looking into the aftermarket for these cars I'm somewhat confused. It seems a lot of you have done the chip, filter, and exhaust, some of you have even done the bigger turbo, but it doesn't seem like they yield very good results.
I've currently got a 97 TSi AWD which is why the A4 is so appealing, but with my car it was simply a manual boost controller, ported manifold, ported Mitsu. Heavy Industries 16g turbo, better BOV and a 3 in. turbo back exhaust system and BANG!!! Four tire spinning, asphalt ripping, camaro stomping, slam you in the seat wicked fast.
My main question is why do these same things on the Audi not give the same type of results?
The Talon weighs 3300 pounds, so the weight is pretty much the same. It's an ODBII car so I have to deal with that as well.
I really want the A4 but would like it more w/300 horsepower.

Plus for ur talon the after market turbo was A LOT bigger. If u want a fast car get a 99 GSX and get a 16g turbo. Tuned nicely ull be in the low 12s all day for less than 2k. THATS HOW U MAKE A POCKET ROCKET.

I've already got that in the Talon. Eclipse's & Talons are referred to as Diamond Star Motors, all built in Normal, Il.
The wife is suggesting I get rid of my "impracticable two door" and get something bigger. Well that leaves me little options. I was looking at the A4's thinking they were kind of like a modern day Galant Vr4.
What's the biggest turbo you can stick on an A4?

1.8ts are slow, even worked up they' re slow. 14 sec 1/4 mile for a souped up car? THATS SLOW. get a 2.8 and supercharge, or s4. Or get a C5

if he doesn't know what he is talking about why is his car as fast as supercharged 2.8 without boost? This is his brother. buying S4 soon. :)

is very, very small. The 1.8T is a fantastic engine, but Audi wanted it to act like a V6. So the K03 has pretty much no turbo lag, and the engine runs out of steam at 6k on the tach. It's not a big turbo that you can dial way up.
You can get 220hp from a chip, exhaust, and an intake kit. After this, you need to replace the turbo, there are options out there that give you 280+hp. 300+hp is obtainable, it will just take more $$$ to get there. A stage III APR kit, for instance, runs around 5k.
Understand the A4 is not a Talon, while i love the Talon, its a crude car in comparison. 0-60 is not the A4's strength, but once at speed, the A4 is unflappable. You will get a car that is close to the Talon's acceleration, equal handling, a far superior quattro system, and an extra set of doors, so you get to keep a nice turbo car, but still do all the RL things you need done.
If money is not an object, then start with an S4, stock they are 250hp, chipped at stage1 they are 300, and you can build them high from there.

Proabably the biggest you would want to run is a T3/T4. You could probably push 350hp with the stock internals. I think you could custom fabricate a very fast car much cheaper than the kits available from the big name tuners (however you would miss out on a lot or R&D). A K04 is a bad bang for the buck in my opinion. Injectors, manifold, intake, FPR, 3" exhaust, and intake. The only problem would be finding someone to program a one off chip for you.

brake upgrade, wheels and tires with it to match the performance) = big$$$
Or you could get a S4 - chip will put you @ 305HP
exhaust 320HP, downpipes 345-350HP, new turbos 420-450HP intercooler 500HP?
Big $ again... Audi's are expensive to modify!

I'm planning on getting an A4 auto (98 1.8t or 97 2.8) and thinking of doing the APR stageII(1.8t) within the first month or two. Considering that i had american (automatic)that did 0-60 in under 8sec and quarter mile 15.5sec almost stock, i was wondering what would it take for an A4 auto to be approx. 0-60 6-7sec and 1/4mile 15sec. flat or less. What kinds of mods would be for either 1.8t or 2.8. (automatic is the key word here) Thanks for your time.

We own both an A4 1.8T and a GSX ('96). I have chipped the 1.8T and the GSX is stock although one of our co-workers has a '98 with a lot of the usual go fast goodies - chip, BOV, exhaust, hybrid turbo larger intercooler so I have some idea what the 2.0T is capabable of.
At the upper end of the development for horsepower (in the vicinity of 350), I think the engines will produce similar horsepower curves. However the starting points are quite different. The 1.8T uses a rather small turbo intended to provide a V6 like low end. The 2.0T uses a larger turbo that doesnt deliver the low end torque but does offer greater high RPM potential. Next the plug compatible upgrade turbos for each have similar properties - the K04 on the 1.8T still isnt as good at the upper RPM end of the spectrum in terms of available boost and effeciency as is available for direct bolt in to the 2.0T engine. Once you get past the need for a direct bolt in replacement for the 1.8T turbo (new exhaust manifold, exhaust system, engine management software, charge air plumbing) the playing field levels out considerably. However getting there isnt as progressive as with the 2.0T. The change over of turbos away from the KKK series costs a bundle because of all the other manditory changes. It also costs a bit more than similar pieces for the 2.0T because the number of pieces sold for the Mistu engine in the aftermarket is much larger than the 1.8T market so far. This is likely to change somewhat as more VW's with the 1.8T mounted F-R like the Passat hit the road.
