Black paint, light scratches (cannot feel them, only see them) in clearcoat.

I tried the archives, but I only find partial answers...

I have no buffer, so (1) what buffer is best value/best performance (orbital, I assume), (2) what type of pad should be used on the buffer, (3) what products and in what order should be used, and (4) what technique with the buffer should be used (pressure, pattern, etc.).

Oh yeah, and if I take it to a pro-detailer what do they typically charge (1" x 6" area) <-- this is to compare the costs to buying a buffer and materials.

all replies much appreciated,
steve

forget about the buffer. You do not need it to remove light scratches. Start w/ the least agressive tool you think might work and repeat application if necessary. More, forget about any circular motion when thinking about detailing your car. Move your hands along the lines the air passing along your car, not in circular motions.

If really ugly scratches, get some G27 (or something like that) scratch remover from Target or general auto stores. This is still not a very agressive rubbing compound that got out several large scratches for me.

If not that ugly scratches or if you are a purist, use Mothers' pre vax cleaner. A little more work, but you have better control.

Again, if you are a purist then use some glaze. (I used Mothers sealer and glaze, not too hot, and 3M Imperial Hand glaze, nice). Then vax with your favorite one.
