I ordered a '99 A4 on Sept 4 1998 , and recently my dealer told me it would be built during week 44 (which ended Nov. 7).
I imagine that if the car has actually been built, a VIN exists for it, and as soon as a car is allocated to a dealer, that dealer gets the VIN on his printout.
The question is, when do USA-bound vehicles get allocated; is it when they have passed thru customs at the U.S. port, or is it right out of the factory?

thanks,
-K.
'99 1.8T qMS , somewhere on the Atlantic ...

Koushik: based on your numerous posts concerning the VIN of your A4, I assume the dealer is refusing to give it to you. Is this the case? If so, it probably means the car has *not* been built. If not, then you might really need to light a fire under them to get it.
My dealer was virtually worthless when it came to keeping me informed as to the production status of my Avant (refusing to give out the production number, etc.) When the build week finally came and went, they *still* said they didn't know where my car was on the production line.
I'd waited about two months longer than you have and had *had it*. Here's what I did: I got the saleboob on the phone and told him that if he could not confirm within 24 hours that my car was either in production or ready to ship, he could tear up the deposit check. I would cancel the order. He called back in one hour to tell me that -- TA-DA!!! -- the car had been built, was awaiting shipment and had a VIN. I then called AoA with that # and lived happily ever after.
Hope this helps.
