When attempting to perform a spirited launch, people often up the revs and then "drop the clutch". My question is, what exactly is dropping the clutch? Does one simply bring the clutch pedal up quickly (and in control keeping your foot on the clutch pedal), or does one actually let the clutch fly up freely (i.e., remove your foot from the clutch and let if fly up)?

I know either technique is tough on the clutch and probably shouldn't be done very often..

Thanks!

There are 3 steps to "dropping the clutch". At least from what I have learned:
1. Once at a stop, engage the clutch.
2. Make sure you are in first gear and rev the engine up to, say, 4000 rpms by applying the gas.
3. Now quickly release the clutch and the car will lurch forward with great force.

Yes, you just let the clutch fly by releasing your foot all the way off the clutch. And yes, this is bad for the clutch, so don't do it all the time. I found it easier to do in my 99 Miata for some reason (shorter clutch could be the reason). And the Miata made for some really nice tread lays of about half a block (no traction control). But with Quattro, you'll be quick off the line with just a minor squeal of the tires.
