I think the last best guess on the Forum is 2 3/8" with the MBQuart adapters. Since the adapters add depth, themselves, a custom mount would net you about another 3/8" or so (depending on how thick your custom mount is. You're looking at some work...The grill opening would need to be enlarged a bit...did someone say "dremel!"?
I haven't seen anyone claim to have done 6.5's here, but Custom Car Stereo in Houston says they did it for a competition A4, and would do it for mine for $80 a door. I stuck with 5.25's, did it myself, and pocketed the $80...
steve

The door panel is super easy to remove, so since you are more technically inclined than most, I would pop it off, remove the speaker, then remove the grill (can't remember how it's done, but should be obvious once the door panel is off). You'll see what I mean at that point about the opening...it'll be a bit small for the 6.5. Put the whole thing back on, get out the ruler & measure your depth.
Remember to roll the window all the way down to see how clearance will be in that position...
Then comes the fun part...customization!
good luck & happy "cuttin"! Let us know how it goes...and I suggest possibly reinforcing the speaker mount position because the panel has a tendency to vibrate at lower frequencies...the 6.5' will exacerbate that...maybe some type of isolation mount?
steve

I went with a rather expensive stereo upgrade, I love listening to music on a good sound system. I ended up putting in a 3-way speaker system from Dynaudio powered by a Butler vacuum tube amplifier.
I have the one inch tweeter and three inch mid range speakers in a custom built kick panel. I really wanted a 6.5" in the door, no luck. I had to go with a 5.25" (I have a subwoofer, so, it was not a real big deal). Infinity makes a ultra thin speaker that would fit, but I thought they sounded poor.
with that high end gear i guess i am a little surprised (and scared).
I had SEAS, vifa mids, peerless subs, and seas and dynaudio tweeters in my 1991 eagle talon.
The dyns mids were awsome, but beyond my price range.
My goal is to pull the stage as far forward as possible.
BTW did u do the install your self?
What caused u not to do the 6.5?

1996 a4 2.8 qms
----
For A4:
6.5 morel in front (3" voice coil, and IMHO a touch smoother than BAs)
5.5 vifa in back dash
8.0 morel for subs (enclosure TBD--maybe labrynth)
