My dealer gave me an $1100 discount of the sticker price, but told me thats the best he could do. He said if I was buying the car off the lot he could do better. Well, he found a silver one in NY, I told him I wasn't interested becasue it had cloth interior. Turns out that he said he was going to get the car anyway to have it on the lot. Correct me if I'm wrong, but since he was getting the car anyway... shouldn't I be able to get a better price now that it's on the lot?

I just began looking at A4s last week and was told by the local dealer here in Phoenix that I could get a 99.5 for around $1000 over invoice. This was without any haggling and they told me it would be applicable for cars that they would locate at other dealerhips and have shipped here.

So $1780 over invoice sounds like too much for a 99.5.

Dealer service reputation and attitude towards upgrades (if you plan any) can be vital to your overall ownership experience. I paid nearly MSRP for my car, but from a dealer close to me that has a good rep. and an honest attitude towards upgrades.

They know me by name there, and always seem eager to please. I've had the same technician working on my car since I purchased it and he really knows my setup.... even discussed chip and upgrade options with me (so did the service rep, for that matter).

Its unspoken, but, I'll bet dimes for dollars that dealers treat customers who purchase cars from them a little better than those who came from nowhere with a new A4. Sure, the dealer still gets paid for the service work they do on any car.... but my impression (from this and previous cars) is that dealers remember and appreciate those who buy into their #1 money making business- selling new cars.
