I'm shopping around for the A4 1.8 5sp avant wagon and I was wondering whether I should get the sport package or not. Dealer mentioned that the car handles better in snow without the sport package.
any opinions?

The car I test drove without it had alot of body roll in hard turns. I've been very happy with the sport suspension. I'd recommend it if you like to drive hard. I can't comment on the snow though.
Mark (98.5 2.8 QMS) Roger B 01-10-1999, 04:05 PM From what I gather, the problem with the sport package in the snow is mainly with the tires. Get a good set of snow tires for winter and you should be fine.
I consider the package a must have for true driving enjoyment in most other weather elements.
Of course, the sport package does lower the ride height by about an inch which would offer less clearance in deep snow...
- Rog spudman 01-10-1999, 05:47 PM I have the sport package, and it sure didn't hinder my ability to make it through 12" deep snow with no problem, last week! As many people have posted, it is a good compromise between comfort on long distance drives and sport handling in the curves.

spudman
98.5 2.8QMS

Ray Calvo 01-10-1999, 08:11 PM Love it on my 30V Avant. Only complaints are:
- rather uncomfortable ride on rough roads at low speed
- lack of ground clearance in deep snow. Have scraped bottom several times; am a little worried if/when I encounter packed snow or some with unseen ice. Definitely have hit more than in old Coupe Quattro, which had essentially the A4 stock ride height.
Do I regret the Sport pkg. choice? NO!!!!!! Will live with above "limitations".
Cameron 04-11-1999, 04:33 PM Proper service...
New Mobil 1 15w50 every 3000 miles with track events, every 4000 miles with street driving.
New brake fluid every track event or every six months for street driving.
Check fluids, mechanicals, etc. on service interval.
Recommended service...
Go to the dealer every 7500 miles for new oil, new wiper blades, and particularly poor-tasting coffee.
Cameron
James R. 04-11-1999, 06:48 PM Which is what we're talking about 04-11-1999, 07:14 PM nt
Steve S. 12-11-1999, 08:22 AM My car was week 46 production...it docks today in Houston...and I will probably get my car right before new years. Secondly, AFAIK most docks closed down as early as 15th next Wednesday for their Christmas and New Year holiday. There's absolutely no difference between 2000 and 1999. Thirdly, the customs surely will be lazy cause they want to have their Christmas holiday as early as possible. Most December delivery is usually delay because of the inefficient custom clear, port delay (port delay means the port actually closed down till next year) and there will not be many trucks sending cars in either. Finally, you better think of its as a New Year present instead of Christmas present. Good luck! I know the car I want - A4 Avant 1.8T with a few options. Brilliant Yellow, no less (The girlfiend hates the color option). The dealer is telling me 4-5 months for delivery. That's actually what I want, but am afraid if I order this weekend it will be here in 2 months and I won't have the down I want. Any input would be appreciated. Steve S. 12-11-1999, 10:00 PM If you order from scratch..it usually takes about 3.5 - 4 months. The only reason why it would take a shorter time is if you get one in transit to the dealership that is a 2000 1.8TQ Avant in brilliant yellow....odds of that ? slim to none. If you order in the next time slot that the dealer can order...then you will be fine with about 4 months. Most dealers don't order many brilliant yellow A4s....especially yellow A4 Avants that have the 1.8T engine. IMHO, the 1.8T Avant is rare all by itself...add that to a rare color...and you got one rare mutha. Go ahead...order yourself one...and be assimilated into the ORG. You will be assimilated! Steve S. |
