Audi, VW recall 428,000 cars worldwide

WOLFSBURG, Germany (AP) -- Volkswagen and its Audi subsidiary are
recalling about 428,000 cars worldwide, all produced in the first half of 1998,
due to a potential problem with the vehicles'steering mechanism, VW said
Monday.

The recall includes 270,000 VW Passats and 158,000 Audi A4, A6 and A8
cars, said VW spokesman Jens Bobsien.

VW is sending letters to car owners instructing them to go to their dealer or
mechanic to get the problem fixed at no charge as a precautionary measure.

There have been no known accidents as a result of the problem." Bobsien
said.

Bobsien said the ``incomplete seal'' problem on the steering mechanism of the
cars was discovered when some customers complained of a slight noise.
