I was just curious if anyone else's A4 2.8 makes this kind of noise at idle or does it run dead quiet. We have a brand new 1999.5 and it definitely does not run as quiet as the BMW or Acura 6-cylinder engines. There's a slight "Warbling" noise. The dealer said they check this noise along with 3 other A4's, 2 brand new ones and 1 with 20,000 km on it and they all sounded the same. Is this bogus or has anyone else noticed this.

Just curious before I go running to the other side of town to visit the dealership.

I'm not sure what you mean by "warbling," but the 2.8 engine (I just bought a 99.5) does seem a bit rougher in park than the Acuras and Volvos I test drove (i.e., there was more vibration through the steering wheel than I expected). However, once shifted into gear, this went completely away.

Hope this helps.

My 98.5 2.8 makes a slight noise when idling. Has done this since new. Not sure if it's same noise as yours or not. It can only be heard from outside the car.

It sounds like it is a slight accessory noise (ac?) but dealer said the usual - they could hear nothing unusual.

I don't hear it from inside the car and I have plenty of warranty left so I've kind of forgotten about it.

Yes this is normal for a long stroke engine, it can't be perfectly quiet this is why the engine revs so smooth all the way to red line. Also the ECU is always checking that the engine is in perfect harmony so it is constantly adjusting (valves, fuel injectors,timing,etc..) BMW's also do this I had a 3 series 6cyl. and after a spirited drive it was very noticable. My friends 97 porsche twin turbo 100grand car is very noticeable(much, much faster) but you get the point, so don't get nervous unless it is very loud then the engine is only fine tuning it self.
