View Full Version : A4 not performing as Audi states
I own a 99.5 1.8T STip. I think it is the best peice of machinery I have owned and I would not change it for a BMW or any thing else. BUT!!!! Five valve technology is supposed to make the car more powerful while consuming less fuel. After 1500 miles, though, the best MPG I have gotten is 18!!! AND I AM NOT DRIVING THE CAR HARD!!! If I drive it hard I get a measly 14MPG...that is in Ferrari category...from a 1.8 four cylinder.
Any one out there with similar problems or with any suggestions???
I get the same results (18mpg) from my 99.5 manual here in San Diego, CA (I think all gas in Calif will give the same results). For example, when I went to Las Vegas for a few days I got about 24-26mph city and 28-31mph highway (and that's in 100+ degree heat).
Which state do you live in?

I don't know the exact MPG I get, but I do know it's almost equivalent to the 2.5 liter, 24 valve V6 I had in my old Probe GT. The fuel tanks are the exact same size and with both I get just over 300 miles under mixed driving on a full tank. I find this somewhat odd.

Chuck 08-27-1999, 10:58 PM I've got a 98 A41.8t with tiptronic. I know automatic eats fuel but that's no excuse for my poor mialage. With aggressive OR passive driving I'm getting 17-18 MPG in the small state of CT. I wonder what a KO4 turbo would drop it to!!
antony 08-28-1999, 12:29 AM I am intrigued. The best mileage I have gotten in my A4 was on a return trip from Las Vegas. I gassed up in Nevada and got 400 miles out of the tank. I assumed it was because of the considerable amount of highway driving, but you lead me to believe it was the gas. Interesting. I have never been able to duplicate this on California gas, despite driving modestly and on the highway. The best I usually get is about 340 miles...
Oh the highway, with cruise I've gotten 35 with my chipped A4 - speed
set to 70
With free use of the happy peddle on the highway I still got 30, speed
was 10-15 higher in some cases
Around town (not city) it's 28
What's wrong with your car?
Mine is a 1.8fms
Roy M 08-28-1999, 06:14 AM My 1.8Tqm only has 750 miles on it. Yesterday I went on a 150 mile long trip. I filled up before I left. Mostly 2 lane and 30 miles of interstate. A lot of construction along the way.
I reset my trip computer when I filled up. My average mileage was 29.2 per the trip computer. I have found it to be a little on the low side compared to actual calculations. I do have the 5 speed manual but I wouldn't think the tip should change by more than 1 to 2 mpg. My 2.8q tip gets 29 to 31 on a trip. A lot of stop and go around town I would be suprised to see a very low 14 if I have a heavy right foot.
What brand of gas are you using. Be sure and always use premium! Try another brand of fuel.
If it doesn't improve I would check with your dealer.

Christopher Lloyd 08-28-1999, 11:16 AM I'm coming up on 10K miles now in a 1.8T QTipS. I live in the SF Bay Area and use 91 octane (or better).
Consistently get 24.5 on all journeys, 28.5 on long freeway trips.

Mark K 08-28-1999, 02:37 PM See the post above by 1COOLVC, he's getting about the same mileage you are due to a bad oxygen sensor.
I get 23/27 with a 99.5 1.8T qms, I would expect the tip to do slightly lower than that, but not significantly lower unless you're idea of 'normal' driving is shifting at 5500 RPMs.
and see how it does! My '99 1.8Tqms is getting 24.4 mpg in about 85 percent city, 15 percent highway driving. The computer is extremely accurate when tested the old fashioned way.
Since I chipped at 5K, (7K now) , my in town gas mileage seems to have dropped about 1 mpg (gee, wonder why) and 75 mph cruising seems to have improved about 2 mpg.
I, too, thought I might get slightly better mileage but this car just has a tendency to bring out the lead foot in me, I think.

HJohn 08-28-1999, 03:17 PM After 4000 miles I'm getting 22mpg for all in-town driving on my 1.8tqms. I don't drive very hard but I'm having fun with the right pedal every now and then.
I would expect the Tip to be a couple of mpg worse. 18 mpg does seem low. But don't be too concerned until you have more miles on it.
Also be aware that the car will use some oil as it breaks in. Add a half quart if it needs it. Engine friction my affect mileage.
