I love everything about my 98.5 1.8TQMS except the lack of smoothness of the engine. I was spoiled by my last mercedes inline 6. IMO it isnt as smooth my jettas 1.8. Does anyone know of any changes (mounts, chips, etc) that can be made to make the engine smoother?

after installation of my Wett 1 bar chip, and even more (this may get flames) a few days later after K&N air filter was put in. My car was always quite smooth without the air on, but with the compressor running, was pretty rough. The chip helped tremendously, especially that first-to-second shift with the air on.

I have no pinging, no "jerkiness," no problems at all. The chip will increase turbo lag a bit. But that's half the fun, when that baby really kicks in and slingshots you forward. I would heartily recommend chipping your car. Mine has been transformed, and I don't miss the V6 in my '95 Maxima SE one bit since I chipped. Of course, I haven't had any of the "chipping problems" you have been reading a lot about (mainly pinging) on this board recently, so my view is a little skewed. I just apparently have a car that takes well to chipping. Some aren't so lucky.
