Had my car in last week for 32km service and told them about an annoying rattling noise from the front right side everytime I hit a bump. Probably the very common defective control arm problem. They said it could be any number of things and that they would investigate. Picked up my car and was told that the right control arm was replaced. I immediately noticed the same noise. The service manager told me that they did replace the right control arm and that there are 3 control arms and that maybe one of the others failed. He also said that sometimes the problem just goes away. I got pissed off and told him that the noise is coming from the same side and that he had better not expect the problem to fix itself. He told me to bring it back next week and that he would take care of it. I hope this is not going to be a recurring problem especially when the warranty is finished. Does anyone know if the replacements have been reengineered to correct this problem?
I have a 98, 1.8t, quattro, sports package, Hoppen.

I had mine in the shop today for "one of the other control arms" too. Mine didn't rattle, it creaked. However the shop manager told me that clunking or rattling was one of the common symptoms of the control arm problem. He added that the control arm problem is somewhat wide spread and seems to show up at around 20k miles +/-. The good news is that he said (whether its true or not I don't know but I'm doubtful) once the arms are replaced the problem seldom comes back. He doesn't believe that the control arms have been modified to "fix" this problem. Your guess is as good as mine. Its got to be costing AoA big $ tho.
