View Full Version : RIP, dear "Fritz".....(more)

State Farm advised me today that they have decided to "total" my baby after all. Apparently, the folks at Don McGill have successfully convinced my insurance company that although Fritz *might* be repairable, they would not be able to guarantee that the restoration would result in a "safe car". It's clearly the best thing which could happen, but I have to admit that I cried when told of the decision.

SO, I've already called Tony Holmes, my original Audi salesman at McGill, to tell him that we're going to get to work together again. The only "unclaimed" TT available right now is a roadster, but I want to wait for a Quattro coupe...although I told Tony that I'll take either a 180 or a 225. There are 6 people ahead of me on the 180 list, and I'm #18 on the 225 list. Hopefully, under my circumstances, they can figure out a way to speed things up a bit.

Sorry to keep this a bit short tonight, but I'll post again after I've gone out to the body shop to say "goodbye" to my little hero...

Good luck getting a new TT pal. Perhaps your dealer can search other areas. As example, my dad's car-to-be (225ttr) just arrived in Boston and supposedly there were 300 other cars on that boat. Don't know the TT count... but, worth looking around.

Are you gonna get the same color? I've always liked that blue.

At least you are in one piece -- Fritz did the best a car can do.

You might try calling around for TTs that haven't been claimed. In Northern NJ some people have been able to get vehicles very quickly (although waiting lists are still long) ... A friend got a 225TTC a week after walking into a dealership.

Good luck!

It has 7K miles (a new engine of course!), and all the packages except cell phone.

It has Mk1 suspension and no spoiler.

Let me know. I would let you have it for a reasonable price and you could get driving immediately.

in Miami and need a TT fix, it's yours! I would hold out for the 225. Are you going for the same color, or will you consider the first one that comes along?

Good luck, and keep leaning on us whenever the wait gets to you, or your TT jones gets too much to bear.

Take care, Janet.

with a brand new 2001 Audi TT. I hear they are great cars, and they look really cool. :) And that they love their owners back as much as their owners love them.

Best of luck finding a quick 'nother TT. I was going to use the word replacement, but it just doesn't fit.

I have SUCH mixed feelings tonight. "Fritz" clearly saved my life...sacrificing *his* in the process...and yes, this IS a sort of "closure" because it's time to let him go. He was SUCH a hero!

And YES, I "walked away". I am SO lucky...and blessed! I feel changed, somehow...in a positive way, mostly...with priorities in MUCH better order than before. I won't feel so "haunted" forever, I know...just as the pain will also fade.

Don't know whether I want to change color or not. My immediate thought is that I *should*, because I think I need a fresh start. "Fritz" can't EVER truly be "replaced". I don't want black or green, but Amulet Red or Aviator Grey or Silver??? Or maybe Denim Blue with an Ebony interior this time, instead of grey??? Haven't had enough time to think about it yet. Maybe I'll just see what "fate" has in store!

Thanks everybody...I just don't know HOW I would have managed the past almost-6 weeks without this Forum to lean on!

look at TT's when they drive by, see what you like now. Get a gray interior instead of black, for example, to differentiate the cars.

You are most welcome, and I am sure I speak for all of us.
Ivan

...is try to regain that feeling you had when you were first looking at these cars and decided to buy one. This was a real tough thing for you to go through-we all know, and shared your experience as best as we could. It seems to me that the next stop in the road to recovery is getting excited about getting back in the drivers seat of one of these great cars. Good luck Janet.
Jason Dale

Ilchester, sir! Quite staggeringly popular in this manor, squire! Oops sorry my Python is showing.

I've seen a denim blue coupe (lovely), a silver coupe (beautiful), a brilliant black roadster (very nice) and a silver roadster (quite nice). And I've been on the lookout for about a year.
I suspect the first Raven Black coupe (staggeringly breathtakingly utterly gorgeous) around these parts might be mine, in about 6 months :-)

I would advise you to do the 225q. The car is very quick. You will enjoy it immensely until the DV fails. Then, you can replace it and restore your performance once again!

The 225q is not much more money versus the 180q, and I think that you will be glad that you spent the extra dough. I also think you will be a lot happier with the 225 overall, but I think that you need to first acquire a 225q coupe, then find a way to swap control arms with Fritz. The steering response on the Mark II is duller, and Fritz' control arms will restore that "go-kart" handling that you probably enjoy. Where there is a will, there is a way, so don't let anyone tell you they can't do this.

Good luck, enjoy your new 225, and don't look back. If you can't find a TT to your liking, go to the Audi dealer locater, search within a 300 mile radius, and see what happens. Good luck!

Will you be able to get the 3 parts I mentioned to you quite a while ago?

Gas door, TT Badge, Audi Rings . . . then bring to a really good Frame store and have a very nice momento created for yourself :)

Try and think of any other pieces that might look good also, possibly the radio cover, but kinda tough to get out.

Hopefully they can push you to the number one slot and get you back into another TT.

I hope you are feeling better Janet and good luck with getting a new car. :)

Good Bye Fritz, we hardly knew you. DarTTh sends his condolences ;(

having your dealer call around to other dealers to assist in getting you back in a TT as soon as possible? If he's not willing to do that, I'm sure there are more than enough people on this forum who can get you in a TT in no time.

BTW...you ought to get as many "souvenirs" or mementos from Fritz as possible. Grab some rings, gas cap, emblems, air vent rings, keys, license plate, CD cartridge, floor mats, stereo cover, anything aluminum, cup holders, speedo/tach, etc. Pretty much grab anything you can get your hands on.

Also, I don't remember if it was damaged, but if it wasn't, grab the front panel where the license plate is attached. When you get your new car, don't have your dealer drill holes. Use the old panel and keep the new one intact. You can treat it as a transplant. It'll be your way of keeping Fritz alive.

Best of luck & hope to see you on the road very soon!!
TP

...and took a look in that area of the left back wall of the car when I was out at the body shop last week. I was STUNNED, given the impact in that area of the car, to see that the CD-changer area looked relatively intact! Couldn't easily get the cartridge out, though, but I'll try again. If nothing else, I honestly can't remember exactly which CD's were inside the day of the accident...so hopefully the remaining pieces will at least reveal what I need to replace. (I KNOW that one of them was "Sgt. Pepper's...", though...)

I'm planning to see what little "goodies" I can retrieve, but I've already been told that the suspension is shot because of sliding up & over the curb when I quit spinning. Would *that* have likely damaged the control arm, Brad?

I'm not sure if that would have damaged them or not. However, I do feel that Audi is "suspension swap happy". Both the dealers and the parent seem to want to get rid of anything Mark I, which is a shame in my opinion.

Of course, the dealers do get paid a decent amount for doing those "KY" recall jobs, so generally, completing the job is money in their pockets. Maybe they're planning on billing Audi for a "KY" retrofit on Fritz, and also collecting from the insurance company. Cha-ching!

Not saying they're doing this, of course, but obviously I am a bit of a cynic. I would make my case to Audi, and consider having someone else look at it, if possible. It may not be doable, but I would give it a good shot.
