I am running my 1.0 bar APR chip for about a week now and yesterday for the first time, I heard the engine pinging under full throttle!
Does anyone know how ambient temperature and pinging relate? Also, what brand of gas is less likely to cause pinging?
When I first installed my chip I had some Chevron 92 in the tank. I didn't hear anything like pinging but still, I pumped 4 gal of 100 octane to be on the safe side. Costed $4.4/gal!!!!
After emptying the tank yesterday, I filled 6 gallons of Shell gas. Outside tems were 112 F (San Fernando Vally, CA) and I heared pinging. Later I filled the rest of the tank with Unocal 76 and it didn't help. Now the tank is full and I have to wait untill I can put in some good 100 octane stuff!
Does anyone know what ratio would work (100octane to 92 octane)?
Thanks,

I'm in Arizona, but haven't spent much time at full throttle. Best in the morning when it's cooler. Torque in third gear at about 2500rpm is wonderful. Feels like my small block! Great job APR!

I also installed my APR chip this past weekend. I had pings under WOT around 2500 and 3000 RPMs. Temperatures were only around 89-94F. What I noticed is that all it took was for the computer to get adjusted... the pinging went away. I run AMOCO 93. So I would recommend... disconnect your negative battery terminal for 2 minutes. Then reconnect..... Put key on the on position for 4 minutes... then turn the key to start the car. Drive around for 2-3 miles w/o lead foot. Then try it... it might ping (mine did). So I kept driving avoiding WOT, and it went away. No problems since, but I will keep the list posted. One thing I did notice was that if I am rolling and I am in 2nd gear...as I head up a hill if I floor the car, the lag is much larger than it was before the APR. It might just be this one spot I have to do this.. but I figured i'd mention it.
I hope you have your problem resolved. APR has been actively involved and always seem to work for solving problems.

I don't know about the guy complaining of pinging, but the post looks as though he has not even bothered to contact APR as yet on the problem.
Yet his questions here may reflect as poor reflection on the product in question. I don't think thats fair to APR or any other MFG.
So I am all for APR (or anyone else) trying to clear their name here. Further more the APR guy did not try to waste bandwith, just tell the customer to do what woould have been the logical thing to do in the first place--contact the mfg/distributor/retailer.
Besides I wish other mfgs would "slum" here as well.
I hear AoA does, but never seen any responses from anybody who has the rings behind them..

to call them in a tactful and helpful way instead of saying hey doofus, don't complain here, call us! I've also never seen APR "market" on here anyway. They've been a tremendous presence on .BOrg concerning chipping etc.
It's needless to say this, but your post is out of line.

also agree, I rarely drive at WOT all the time. I appreciate the power most when driving on the highway. You know, the best way to remind yourself why you spent the $ for the chip is to take it out for a few days, then put it back in. Questions answered.

Octane requirement increases 1/2 octane per 10 degree temperature increase.
Octane requirement decreases 1 1/2 per 1000 feet of elevation (references available on request)
You can buy 100 unleaded at the Texaco 20901 Vanowen at DeSoto in Canoga Park; and also at 6633 Valjean in Van Nuys (don''t know what kind of business).
Hope this helps

And for the half of today that it didn't rain in DC I was loving it! Second-Fifth is ridiculous! I'll probably sell my combo chip/ecm in the Spring and move up to the K04, but this would be more than enough to satisfy my urges. Hell all I kept thinking while driving my Passat today was "Slow down! a ticket at this speed would be ridiculous...)No pinging whatsoever with mine

One is in Thousand Oaks and the other one in Pasadena, Arroyo Parkway, right where the 110 ends.
Both places are unocal 76 stations. I only used the one in Pasadena, since I live there.

They will work with me to resolve the pinging issue. Its basically a combination of the extreme hot temperatures (>110 F) and the bad California gas. He offered to give me a reprogrammed chip with less agressive timing if the problem presists when it gets colder.
I really like APR's customer service and I am more than positive they will find the solution.
Also to make things clear: The pinging only did occure one time at full throttle with outside temps >100F.
That is not meant as a flame to you. I merely want you to think about the fact that it's really not fair to criticize and then be anonymous.
The other point I'd like to make is that I feel it is certainly a good thing to help people on this board by correcting misinformation/ spreading accurate information. It helps everyone to learn.
In addition, if it were not for the advertisers here, this site not have the money to exist. I think it's a good site an I for one, want to see input from all knowledgeable sources.

...something that should be banned? Nobody knows the APR chip better than APR. I think they are entitled to help their customers. Or, would you prefer that all business drop customer service? Maybe everyone here should stop offering help, as it may be an attempt for them to market their knowledge.
Also, APR is a paying advertiser. Chris has a right to post information he thinks is beneficial, and to alert customers. I didn't even see any attempt to advertise or to push his product. Simply a matter of helping out.

ok so what are the octane increases needed per bar or psi of turbo boost?
what are the increases needed per point increase in compression ratio?
what is the octane rating needed to run the 1.8T at 1 bar boost and 9.5 compression?
if the TT with 0.8 bar needs 94 octane, i'd say around 95.
you guys are wasting your time arguing about which chip pings less. why don't you
let the air out of your tires and argue which brand handles better? hahaha
