03/14: Omaha. Took key out of ignition, opened driver door, heard 'bingbingbing', couldn't arm alarm or use remote. Spent approx 30 mins re-closing doors, hatch, and hood, driving around, playing with lights. Looked through TT forum (when search was WORKING) and found others with similar prob. Had to wait to take to dealer due to job-relocation-induced long road trip. Started using key to lock/unlock door, couldn't arm alarm.
03/18: St. Louis. Ran errands. During one stop noticed alarm armed and I could use remote. Drove to Goodwill, removed key from ignition, dropped off clothes, got back in car, COULDN'T PUT KEY INTO IGNITION. Crowd of Goodwill guys (bless their hearts) tried to help. After 15 mins 3rd one who tried finally got key back in ignition. Drove immediately to St. Louis Audi dealer but service is closed on weekends. Told salesperson I was afraid to remove key from ignition but had to drive back to Omaha next day. Salesperson recommended using extra key (had with, thank god !) to lock doors.
03/19: St. Louis -> Omaha. Made long road trip. Nervously left car two times with scarf hiding key in ignition. Locked doors with other key, but didn't put me at ease.
03/20 (today): Omaha. Nervously parked TT at work with key in ignition, scarf draped over steering column to hide it. Called Omaha Audi dealer. Dealer said they couldn't take car that day. Went into assertive mode and insisted on dropping car off and getting loaner or rental. Dropped car off and got rental. :-) Service called later to tell me prob is ignition lock cylinder, part won't be in for a while (they couldn't estimate), and I should pick car up. Told them no way ! Only have one car, just relocated to new city, don't know anyone, just started new job, can't afford to be stuck with a car that won't accept the ignition key ! Asked service about a temp lock cylinder (read about solution in TT forum). Service rep said wouldn't be covered under warranty, would call me back with price. Meantime, I looked through forum posts again, found lead to Audi Tech Bulletins. Found C57-99-01 (edited for brevity) ...
"If an ignition lock cylinder requires replacing, a 2 step process is required:
1. Order a loaner lock cylinder which does not katch the current key combination of the vehicle. The customer will temporarily have two keys.
2. At the same time you must order via Red Order a lock cylinder for which you must provide the key code or VIN.
Submit a warranty claim for the part and labor for installing the temporary loaner lock cylinder.
When the new matched lock cylinder is installed, submit a second warranty claim for parts and labor."
Called service back and read the above to foreman. Foreman advised me to keep rental car and he will call me tomorrow morning.
I THANK ALL OF YOU WHO CONTRIBUTE TO THIS FORUM. YOU ARE HELPING ME TO NOT GET RIPPED OFF !!
Update soon, I hope.
