I was reading the Audi A4 brochure...I think the A4 2.8 Quattro was listed as 0-60 in 9.0secs and the stick around 7.2 or so. Thats almost a whole 2 seconds difference!!?!? I know the auto trans. weighs a bit more, but not THAT much more. If I got the Tiptronic chip would my 0-60 run close to 7.2 seconds? Maybe around 7.5 sec(since the auto trans weighs more than stick)??

Taller gears equal slower acceleration. Also, the shifts take longer, but I don't think that is that big of a deal.

Rodent Rack magazine tested a manual A4 2.8 Avant in March of 1998 and an Tip version in their Jan 1999 issue. 0-60 was 7.2 sec. for the stick and 9.0 for the Tip. 1.8 sec is a WHOLE LOT of wasted horsepower. To put this in perspective, if you had a stick shift that turned a 9.0 sec 0-60 time, how much would you have to spend in mods to shave off 1.8 seconds? I love the convenience of automatics, and the Tip with steering wheel shift buttons seems really trick, but I ordered my 2.8 Avant with the manual because I didn't want to throw away that much power, in addition to the fuel mileage beating and the $1075 premium at purchase.

Jim Garrett currently has an excellent chip mapped for the Tip trans. Contact Air & Water Enterprises in Philadelphia, PA.

I now have a 5 speed A4 and a Tip A6 in my family and there really is a big diff in the trannys.
I've been experimenting with the Tip and found that if you put it in "4" instead of "D" you lock out fifth and it seems to shift more aggressively. You should also get in the habit of knocking the lever to the right and kicking down into 4 on the Tip side whenever you need more power from the engine room. Also don't be afraid to really put your foot into the accelerator; it's not very linear and needs to be prodded.

I don't like the way tip usually chooses gears. It has a tendency to keep the RPMs at around 1000 for efficiency -- this means it ALWAYS needs to downshift for power, and the downshifts are often slow. While efficiency is good on the highway, having the stupid tranny shift gears constantly around town as I vary the accelerator in response to busy traffic is a PAIN.
So when I'm specifically looking for performance, I always leave it in manual shift mode.
As phred says, even in automatic mode, putting it into 4 instead of D around town can be a good idea because it prevents the tranny's annoying habit of going into 5th at 35 miles per hour.

So pretty much even if I chipped the ECU and tip trans, I will still NOT be able to beat a stock 2.8Q stick?! Say 0-60?? That really sucks! Should have gotten a stick...too bad my dad wouldn't let me get a stick car...

I find that bopping down *two*gears quickly with the tip (easy with steering wheel buttons) wakes the car right up.
