The front license plate obviously spoils the look of the front end. Has anyone out there in a state requiring a front plate not had one put on? Any repurcussions? I would think that most cops would pull you over just to look at the car, and might forget about the fine.

This topic has come up before, and the general concensus is that you probably won't get pulled over for lack of a front plate. It hasn't happened to any of us.

BUT... if you get pulled over for some other violation, they will ticket you for the lack of a front plate. This happened to me with my Ford Probe.

So, even if you did get an ~80 dollar ticket once in your life, that's worth keeping the front of the TT unscarred.

I got pulled over on route 84 east in Danbury, CT going 88 in my 2000 Subaru Forester without a front plate with my vanity rear plate for my future 225 Roadster, `MY TT`. The officer asked if I knew how fast I was going and I told him no. Unfortunately, my valantine radar detector did not give me enough time to slow down as it was instant on radar. Luckily for me, he decided to give me a break even though he told me I was RECKLESS for going 88 and only gave me a ticket for 70! He did not look at the front of the car to notice no front plate.

Here in California a front plate is required. However, many owners of higher end cars opt not to display them. If cited, it's called a "fixit-ticket", which means you put it on and then have another cop sign it off. Maybe a ten dollar fine. If you look at the new Jaguars, especially the convertible, you can see that a front plate is virtually impossible. As a retired cop, I can say that it is never an enforcement policy to cite with any agency, but left to the discretion of the individual officer. It's a reason to stop and meet that good looking driver. I never had a situation wherein a front plate or the absence of a front plate was vital to what I was investogating. I won't put one on mine until I'm stopped. By the way, if stopped for speeding and you display a bad attitude, count on being cited for the front plate. So, be extra nice.

Just a quick visual tells me that I should be able to take a pair of 3 or 4" lag bolts and sandwich a 2x4 through the low part of the front grill to mount the plate. Any current owner think this feasible without damage to the grill? I definitely want a virgin front end, with a temporary way to pass inspection.

In MA, it's $30 if caught without a front plate, but I hear it's not an insurance violation. But the car won't pass inspection without the front plate unless you're lucky.

I have my TT registered in NY where the front plate IS required. But as someone mentioned the higher end car owners rarley have a front plate.

I bought my car in CT where the front plate is NOT required and I asked the dealer, who regged the car for me in NY, not to put the plate on. They gladly obliged.

When I went to get the car inspected I was all ready with tie straps to strap the plate to the grill just for the inspection. The guy said not to even bother, he passed the car for the visual inspection. He said not to ruin the front of the car with the plate.

I have been in CT since I got the car and plan on moving here and switching the reg of the car, so I won't need the plate. As it stands now, while in NY I will just take teh ticket if I get one.
