98.5 1.8TQMS - Wett 1.0 - Stebro cat-back exhaust

I was driving (hard) and was at max boost when my exhaust note immediately changed to LOUD!!! I pulled over (less than 1/4 mile from home) to find the cat/downpipe separated from the turbo.

It appears from the marks on the cat/downpipe that this piece slides into the turbo but it does not appear as if it was welded in place.

Someone please tell me that I can reinsert this piece into the turbo and weld it there permanently! I have 60,000 miles on the car and I am out of warranty!!

This sucks!!

...turbo and the intermediate pipe that leads to the cat has "slid" out of the flange. It doesn't even seem like it was ever really welded!

Could all of the repeated heating cycles (getting the turbo GLOWING red hot) have done this??

I am bummed because the car is otherwise flawless.

What probably happened is that the catalytic convertor separated from the flange that connects it to the turbocharger. There are no welds on the outside as the welding is on the inside of the pipe. What you need to do is remove the catalytic convertor and the flange that separated from the cat and simply apply a nice weld reattaching the two. You may want to mark the relative position of the convertor to the flange before you remove them from the car so that you can assemble them in the correct position for welding.

that way it was lined up correctly, I then took the part off and had a gas weld done.

I would check with dealer because since in is a emissions componet, This would cause the car to fail a EPA test and should be replaced check you warranty guide and dealer, just don't try to fix you self , because it might be covered and any quick fix attemps might void this warranty

Two months ago, the flange between my turbo and cat broke at the point the flange exited the turbo. Dealer refused to replace it citing an aftermarket exhaust as the reason for the break. $&@%#! Dealer wanted ~$1000 for a replacement cat and install.

Went with a TAP Sport Cat instead and had it installed locally.
