View Full Version : Wett vs. APR, which is better? Frank 08-25-1999, 11:22 AM Paul 08-25-1999, 11:47 AM I hear both are comparable. Can't go wrong. Both chips have had problems, but seem to work with the cutomer to solve these. Wett is closer to me location wise (2 hours). Read up and make a decision, remember neither is a bad choice. Davy 08-25-1999, 12:06 PM - Paul 08-25-1999, 01:23 PM Audiboy 08-25-1999, 03:51 PM Shifting was done at a conservative 5600 rpm so that only changes in power is the factor. Temperature is 65F. GTech was used. I do not have my note pad with me, but here are some approximate numbers I remember.. Stock 1.8TQ, Tiptronic with 225/40ZR-18 tires 0-60 - 9.3 sec. 1/4 mile - 17.5sec @ 85mph (close enough) APR 1.0 chipped 1.8TQ - no K&N yet 0-60 - 7.5 sec. 1/4 mile - 16.1sec @ 91mph These are not the fastest times for his chipped 1.8T. For starters, launches can be made quicker by raising the rpm a bit higher and holding the brake. Also, shifting at higher revs can improve the 0-60 time. For the sake of a comparison and testing ALLAN's patience, I told him to shift excatly at 5600 rpm. I figured, with his Borla downpipe/catback exahust, these numbers shoudl be in the mid to high 6's. Fastest 0-60 run we got was 7.4sec again shifting at 5600 rpm. Regardless, as the passenger taking notes, I can feel the seat of the pants acceleration 2 fold. His car is fast now - much faster than my 2.8 12V despite my mods. HJB 08-25-1999, 03:52 PM It's the area under the curve, not the peak, that determines acceleration. I believe APR has a flatter, wider curve = faster. Stoney 08-25-1999, 04:23 PM Audiboy 08-25-1999, 06:06 PM Let's say everything behaved linearly - and the car weight was 3200 lbs, driver at 160, I am 180lbs. If stock hp was 150 and 210 after chip, then using y=mx+b, I get the following result. I added 0.23 seconds on his 0-60 time. So, Allan can kick me out and get a better 1/4 time but then he might hit a post from watching the GTech and not the road :-) car weight hp lbs / hp 0-60 + driver, me 3540 150 23.6 9.3 + driver, me 3540 210 16.86 7.5 + driver only 3360 210 16 7.27 ChuckH 08-25-1999, 08:55 PM ...are like the kind you eat. Everybody likes a different flavor. Might check the archives, but I think it mainly comes down to how you feel like you are treated when you contact the vendors. Believe me when I say there have been many battles over who has the best chip. Everyone thinks they bought the best one. Jenner 08-26-1999, 05:57 AM You just shaved off 1.8 seconds, assuming the same or better holds true for my '99.5 1.8T QMS then I will go from 8.1 sec 0-60 to a 6.0/6.3 0-60?!?!! I had a APR chip in my car 2 weekends ago and it didn't feel like 0-60 in 6sec How accurate is that G-Tek thing? Audiboy 08-26-1999, 02:26 PM We also have a picture of the car hitting 60mph on the speedo the same time the GTech blips the 0-60mph time. Pretty damn good I would say. I don't think you shaved 1.8sec off the manual also as a lot of factors come in to play as you get faster such as wind drag and friction. But I am willing to bet, you are running in mid to high 6's 0-60 with a manual tranny. Hilton 08-29-1999, 06:26 PM I have had 2 different versions of the Wett chip a version 1 and a version 2 (at the same time) And I have tested them back to back. Both were 1 bar chips but with different characteristics, for city driving I like the full on rush of the v1 chip, however the v2 chip seems to pull a bit better in the top end above 5000rpm, not by much mind you, but enough to be felt by the seat of the pants. The v1 chip pulls much harder down low at 2500rpm and the turbo can really be heard spooling up compared to their v2 chip so i would suggest the wett chip to be an excellent option. Go with whoever is offering the best customer service I say. There's realistically not much in it between the reputable brands. 2/100's to 60mph/100kmh if your lucky! H. |
