My '00 A4 1.8TQMS is on order and should be here in October or November. I live in Phoenix, Arizona and of course I got a black car (Volcano, or "pearl effects" as THEY call it).

Anyway, how do you guys like the A4 A/C? I have seen a lot of posts about the quirky climate control, but I don't care about that too much...I figure in the summer mine will just be ON :) I have also heard the compressor is quite loud. But is it cold? I also got leatherette seats (Ecru, so maybe not too bad) and am getting some serious tint to control the heat some.

Any feedback on the A/C strength, volume, reliability is appreciated...you don't have to convince me it is good enough, I just want to be prepared because I am not backing out on this car :)

Thanks,
Rick

I'm not in the desert, but things have been pretty hot here in NC this summer...and it's not a "dry heat" here ;-). The AC has been fine in my A4. Also, the engine cooling system in this car is pretty good...I sat in traffic for over 2 hours on a 100 degree day with the AC cranked and the coolant temp never budged from center and IF the oil temp moved it wasn't much. I've got Onyx leatherette seats and they aren't bad at all. They will retain heat if in direct sunlight (get a shade for the windsheild), but otherwise are not a problem. The ecru will probably be even better.

Rodney

Other cars I owned were: '84 Coupe GT, '93 MX-6, '92 Jetta, '92 900, '95 850T, '99 9-3

The coldest A/C I've expereinced are from GM cars, which I wouldn't consider owning.
Well, maybe a Vette...

Since I picked up my car in July we have had 20+ days of hot, humid (you don't get that in AZ) weather. The day I took long test drives the A4's were registering near 100. The A4 has kept me cool during this hot summer here in the northeast.

Compared to the climate control system on my wife's 97 Acura TL, the Audi's IMO is much better. On the Acura I always have to override the Auto setting. The Audi, I just adjust the temp in the range of 70-73 depending on how hot I feel and it gets into a comfort zone quickly and adjust nicely I think.

Also if it feel too cold an one degree click will usually slow the fan speed down whereas on the Acura I have to move 4-5 degrees to get a change sometimes (this is why I usually manually override it.) I read some article about how engineers are changing the climate software quite a bit to get it right and I think this shows in the Audi.

Just got back from an LA to Vegas trip. 110 degrees for a lot of the trip. Climate control at 75 degrees was perfect for the whole trip. No complaints whatsoever.

I have a Santorin Blue w/opal and I have noticed here in Los Angeles that it takes my car about 4-5 minutes for the air coming from the vent to get from cool to real cold. I leave my windows down for 2-3 minutes if the car has been in the sun this time of the year then put them back up as the air get colder. After this period the interior ir very comfortable.

Overall I'd say the AC rates about an 8 on a scale of 1 to 10. I have to park in the sun at work. If I use my sunshade and leave the sunroof kicked forward to vent hot air, it takes about 5 min. for the car to comfortable. On extended driving around town in 110° heat I'll get some sweat on my back (leather seats) but overall I'm pretty comfortable. I know this is pretty subjective, but at least none of my passengers have ever complained.
