Having to keep the cheap ashtry open to power phone or use radar detector is one of the only design flaws inside the car.

I modified a 12v connector, from Pep Boys, by reducing its length in half and soldering the wires from two female connectors into it, filled all the vacant space with black silicone.
It allows me to completely close the ashtray, bring the wires and connectors out back so I can use a radar detector and cell phone.
Total cost less than $10.

Completely agree,
Finally got to see the real thing in person today,my first comment was where do I put the phone & where do I plug it in.
A second user friendly point as per all terain 4wd's may have been usefull.(Are we to fusy?)

My wife's New Beetle has three power outlets -- two in the front console and one in the hatch. And no cigarette lighter or ashtray at all -- which for us would be a waste of space anyhow.
Y'r obd't s'v't,
Jon

In my 90S I stole a 12v source from the dome light/sunroof assembly and ran a short length of the power cord that came with my detector over to where the passenger visor is. The detector stays nicely in the visor (until my bride decides to check her makeup, at which time the detector falls from the sky and clocks her on the head).
I plan on this simple "extension" with the TT as well, looks do-able. Any comments?

I have used your short wire connection method with much success. Recently purchased an Escort Solo which requires 2 AA batteries--problem solved.Have 9 hrs use on first set of batteries--hope this continues and doesnt end up a battery nightmare, If so
I'll go back to the short wire !!
Bill
