I've been thinking about Brad's posting re: doing without a front license plate. Here in Illinois, as in California, front plates are required, but there seem to be plenty of cars on the street whose owners have elected not to mount a front plate. What are the risks? How expensive is the ticket?

I live in Illinois and have not used my front plate for years with no problem (altough I'm somewhat of a renegade).If asked I would simply say it must have fallen off (never been asked, even when stopped for speeding).<br> PS: Don't use the car to take an Illinois drivers test because they check for the front plate and will not pass you without it (learned the hard way).
