View Full Version : Inevitable TT Stereo Questions (long)

Greetings:
I have a few questions about the TT's stereo. Because I have a deposit on a car that is over one year from delivery (225bhp TT), I have not had the opportunity to choose options. However, I know some of you have ordered your cars, and since the front-wheel drive TT is due fairly soon I presume you've also chosen options. As such, I'm sure you've pondered the stereo question.
The following are relevant excerpts from the Audi of America TT press release of Tuesday, January 5, 1999:
"The optional CD changer has a separate compartment in the side panel behind the driver, the audio system's amplifier is beneath the rear seat and the first aid kit is easily reached when needed in the side panel trim behind the passenger's seat."
"The Audio Package includes a 175 watt Bose premium sound system with four loudspeakers in the doors, two 2-way rear loudspeakers, a center speaker in the dashboard, and a six disc CD changer (located in the storage compartment next to the left rear seat)."
A little background:
I currently have a nice sound system, complete with 2, 10" subs in a dual band-pass box, big a/d/s amp, in-dash cd, satellite speakers galore, etc. I have truly enjoyed it, but would probably not bother in my TT. Why? I actually don't want the hassle, the space compromise (with the subs), or the theft problem (I had to replace everything because of theft--including bodywork on the car itself!). I also don't want stereo installers ripping my car to pieces (again). So, I will probably only install my existing amplifier IF IT IS A SIMPLE AFFAIR (read: unplug old, plug-in new). So, I'm wondering if it's a remove and replace affair, or if it'll be more difficult.
My questions:
1) Does anyone know if the amplifier location (beneath the rear seat) is specific to the standard sound system, the Bose, or both? After looking at A4.org for a long while, it is my understanding that the Bose system on the A4 utilizes self-powered (in other words, the amplifiers are attached to the speakers) rear speakers and an independent amplifier for the other speakers. I wonder whether this is the same with the TT? If so, perhaps the amp would not "drop in" very easily. If the standard system has an outboard amplifier, do you know if it powers all of the speakers?;
2) Where exactly in the dashboard is the center speaker located? After inspecting a Neiman Marcus TT (with Bose) I still haven't a clue!; and [finally]
3) What do you plan on doing? Why?
Thanks for your time (and for replying),
John P.
PS--I listened to the Bose system in the Neiman Marcus TT, and it sounded pretty good.

I've had some exposure to Bose in other cars. Namely a '95 Max SE. I now have a '97 Max SE. In both cases, I swapped out (read: big pain in the a**) both systems. My TT should have the Bose, so I'm hoping it's good enough. My guess is that nothing will be easy to swap. My thinking is to listen to it and see if the tweets are up to snuff. If not, I think an easy and significant change would be a swap of the tweets to MB Quart, etc. We'll see when I have a listen. I too am sick of doing this type of work. If only the systems were acceptable. I get a lot of enjoyment and use from my current system. Pete

I'm gonna sell my Kenwood MASK & 10disk CD cos the 10disk probably wont fit and the Kenwood isn't going to fit in the dashboard because the Audi stereo it would replace is a good couple of inches longer. PLUS that silver cover thing that covers the stereo will probable break my stereo everytime I turn the engine on because the MASK system spins the front round to hide the stereo from thieves.
I'm gonna get the BOSE setup and 6 disk cd for convenience, not looking forward to saying goodbye to my yummy kenwood and 10 disk though !

I ordered my TT Quattro without the stereo. The dealer said it was possible but they couldn't gaurantee it. I usually remove the factory stereo anyway.

Would someone comment on the standard stereo system. Even though there is no CD player, how does it sound? When I test drove the TT I concentrated soley on the performance and neglected the stereo system. I did not go for the Bose, but probably still have time to change it before delivery date. Lastly, how difficult would it be to put in an after market CD changer?
Sufi
