My dealer tells me that this is common and won't check the brakes. Anyone else have problems with brakes squeeking?

Family has owned 8 Audi's and all of them have had squeaking brakes at some point.
The stock pads on my A4 were silent for 25k miles. I switched to Raybestos pads and they now squeak off and on. Friends with VW's, M-B, and BMW's have expereinced squeaky brakes as well. It seems to be a trait common to german brake pads.

As long as braking performance has not diminished, it is normal.

This occurs on the Audi's because they are factory equipped with semi-metallic brake pads... that is why they brake far better than many other stock cars that have similar rotor specs and calipre pressure. What happens is this; the semi-metallic pads heat up, as do any pads. All pads leave a slight residue on the rotor after coming to a complete stop. This residue hardens after sitting. Normally, this woudln't squeal, but since this residue is of a semi-metallic nature, it squeals until it is "burned" off.

Squeal also occurs while driving just due to the nature of some semi-metallic pads. If you think these squeal, try some full kevlar race pads... loud enough to hear over my 101dB exhaust ;-).

Anyway, the local Audi dealership told me to drive my 1.8t 50ft with the parking brake on if the squeal annoyed me... once I new what that sound was, it didn't annoy me anywmore.
