In my '98 A8 when I started the car in the garage the instruments became backlit. Drive outside into daylight and the backlighting became less bright. At night, when turning on lights the instruments again became bright. Now, on my '01 S8 when I start the car in garage the instruments do not become backlit and you cannot see a *^%@#X& thing unless you turn on the lights, and then they become backlit. Upon driving outside into the daylight the instruments become lit when sunlight or some other source of light strikes the dash. I can turn on the instrument lights in the dark garage by shinning a flashlight onto the dash, but then I don't need the &^%%^& instrument lights as I have my flashlight then. What gives? Anyone else experience this. I don't like change man!

Others have complained about the same thing.....mine lights up during the day.....just looked it up in the Bently to see if there is a recoding option:

Brightness of the instrument cluster lighting is automatically regulated based on the brightness of surrounding light. The control range of the automatic brightness control can be adjusted using the plus and minus buttons.

The +/- button does work when head lights are on but not when normal daytime lighting is in effect. They light up in the daylight just fine. Furthermore, when driving into a tunnel your dash lights go out as if to tell you to "turn on your lights idiot". Ahh those Germans!
