What I saw:

A8 1.8T (yup, I said A8)

A4 1.6 TDI (i assume this is "turbo diesel" but not sure)

I even saw an A4 1.9?

To my knowledge, there are (or have been) stringent tax-laws in Italy for engines over 2L. So it might be possible that such engines exist for the italian market only. (Refer to the SUPER turbos of LANCIA due to tax !!!! - INTEGRALE RULES !!! - I once had a Lancia Delta td)
In Germany there are the A4 1.6L (gas) and the A4 1.9L TDI (Diesel, in 90 and 110 and soon 115bhp) as the entry-models. Around here are no A8 under 2.8L (gas) oder 2.5L TDI (diesel).

Is there an Italian around to confirm the unknown engines ?

The Audi was probably driving too fast for you to get a good look.

The diesel A4 and any diesel VW for that matter is only available with:

1.9 diesel 1.9d badge 75 HP
1.9 Turbo diesel 1.9TDi badge 90 HP
1.9 Turbo diesel 1.9TDi badge (with a red "i") 110 HP
2.5 V6 turbo diesel 2.5TDi 150 HP (has 6 gears as well)

You definately saw a 1.6 gas engine:

1.6 gas 100 HP
1.8 gas 125 HP (also offered in the Passat)
1.8t gas 150 HP
1.8t gas 180 HP (with red "t")
2.4 gas ? HP
2.8 gas 193 HP

Most European Audis are the 1.6 gas or 1.9TDI (usually 90HP). Other models are too
expensive. Getting decent alloys costs a fortune and standard equipment is very
basic. Not considering taxes buying a European A4 costs about 30% more
if you want the same options.

the 2.4 V6 has 165 bhp.

Most TDIs in Germany at least are the 110 bhp-version. You can drive them flat-out and still
get >= 30mpg. We LOVE it !

In Belgium almost all TDis are the 90 HP version simply because more than
half are company cars.
