I followed a man in a large V8 this morning with a greenpeace sticker on the window.
In this country V8's are definitely not the norm and it struck me the large fuel consuming engine and the greenpeace philosophy were somewhat at odds.
The driver was alone in the car in rush hour traffic as was I but I was not extolling the virtue of saving the world on my rear window.
So I got to wondering how many of us drive these big cars for fun and if there are practical use for many of us as well.
Personally I think even If I was a bachaelor with no kids I would still like to drive a large powerful car but this may be because I have for some time now.

I had been driving a 96 Olds, when it was just me driving to work, and the wife drove the kids everywhere, that was fine. Once situations changed a bit (I'm driving the kids to/from school), I decided that I should move up from the $3k "decent" car to something a little more substantial. I started looking at BMWs (e39 5ers, e38 7ers) since I used to have an e28 535i. Wife pointed out a nice A6 quattro, and I started to notice that even A8s were within reach.

First priority was safety. Second rule was that it shouldn't be boring. I'd say the A8 wins on both accounts.

But it looks like my bachelor life might come to the end in a couple of weeks. Going to propose to one very beautifull girl who I know for a years (sister of my best friend).

... tho my previous UrS6 once carried a double stroller, three baby seats (er SANS kiddies!), and no less than FOUR 255/40/17 Kumho MX's to the tire shop. I was blown away.

Anyway, me, the wife, a 4 yr. old in a full booster, and two 2 year olds in forward facing kid seats in der //S8.

Truth is though, we take wifey's ML320 mit 3rd row seats 99% of the time and I rarely have the kids on board. But the //S6 needed to go as wifey no drive stick, so had to have an auto to swap cars with.

2 months now in der //S8, gotta say, it "fits" me ohsowell. Something about the stately seating position and the plethora of shoulder, hip, and elbow space, coupled with the enormous track / wheelbase, really gives a confident, comfortable experience which is what I think makes these cars grow on us (like fungus) so well.

I'm an ave. 6" adult and while I "fit" in my TR3 there 's just something about the experience in a sedan of this size / stature that is intangibly alluring.

Yeah, I'm a dork.

ps. I get to drive a number of silly toys here and there, and, there's something to be said about a car that repeatedly summons overt outward and uncontrollable MUWhahahahah moments when behind the wheel. I find myself giggling out loud most sinisterly at some of the things this car does, and how it does it. All the while no one notices... awesome just awesome.

Muwhahahahaha.

Yeah, I'm a dork, and I also have issues...

longer wheel base was important to haul him and his friends to baseball games, etc. He's now away at college as a freshman. I wonder if I need the backseat room in my next car. S8?? I'm 6'4" tall....is the front seat leg room the same in both the standard and long wheel base A8/S8 cars?

It is not easy to find out there a car with rear seats air bags. You need to think about RS4 or M5 etc.....Why should I have safety when my kids at the rear do not have less????

I was intending to sell the car soon after the purchase due to the car not being something a 22 yr old guy should be driving. I had purchased it about 19k under book value at the time. I had no idea the depriciation was as bad as it turned out to be, plus I fell in love with this beast so shes still with me.

I like having a comfy ride when going out to dinner with another couple, carrying aging parents around (kness don't work so good, so it's nice to have a big back seat), and when taking long trips.
